Tire sizes for 17x8.5

Hello again
Just wondering what tire size to use for a 17x8.5 rim. 225/45 R17 will keep the diameter closer to stock, but 235/40 R17 will be wider but have a taller gap between the fender...

Is it okay/safe to ride 225s on a 8.5 wheel?

Any pics of a 17x8.5 wheel on 225s would be great.

Thanks to all who respond.

The recommended rim width range on 225/45R17 is 7-8.5", even up to 9" on some tires in that sizing, so 8.5 is safe and works fine.

235/40R17 is wider and also fits of course, but as you stated will show a bit more fenderwell gap.

Definetely go with the 235' on the 8.5" rim. The tire diameter is only 25.1", well within +/- tolerances. Fills out the rim a lot better, 225 kind of strectched on 8.5" rim

Tire Rack told me that 225s are well suited for 8.5 (I thought it was a stretch). As well, I was told that a 235 did not fit the front wheel well of the E46. that's what drove me reluctantly to buy 225s for the front instead of 235.

Was I wrong, TR?

How do you like your 225s? Are they really that stretched? The tire width is still wider than the rim. I was told 245/40 R17 would not fit under our wells. I guess if 235s arn't gonna fit, then neither will 245s!

I'm probably going to get the 225s, just because there seems to be more all season options in that size. I'm, so confused

Once again, pics if you have them!
Thanks

Thank's Gary.

A 225mm tire will fit on an 8.5" wheel, BUT the wheel will stick out past the tire and that just doesn't look good.. You can put a 235mm all around with no problems....
