Just to get a bit more clearer sound than stock, is just changing the amp will do it?

or should I change the speakers?

I wouldnt do an after market amp on the stock speakers. they can only handle 21 watts of power. changing the deck would do the trick, but its hard to make an after market deck look good.

That's not accurate about the stock speakers

I have the HK system. I changed the head unit, added subs and amps. I kept the factory Hk separates. They sound incredible with the proper amps and crossovers. I am using an Xtant amp that has 75/channel for my mids and highs. It sounds great and it very loud with little distortion.

I could just be all imagining it but, after I changed my headunit, the sound seems to be better in my car. I didn't change anything else either, still running stock everything, non HK too....I'm probably just hearing things...

you could retrofit the HK system like I did. check out my home page there's a complete write up on the retrofit.

I think I recall Ron or maybe it was Jim Carr saying that the headunits in our cars are perhaps the systems weakest link.

(I could just be retarded too.)

Hey Chase,

You are not hearing things. It SHOULD sound better even with stock components. The new head unit is able to supply more watts to the speakers and does a pretty good job cleaning things up a bit. If you are not an audiophile, it should be totally satisfying with just a head unit swap.

If you could stand having an after market deck in your dash thats what I would do. It is the weakest link...It doesnt have high voltage outputs. Putting an after market amp on stock speakers seems like a waste...You'll have a badass amp with crappy speakers...Thats like having the badest HD tv and using rabbit ears for an antenna. When ever a customer comes into my shop and has that crazy idea, I normally talk them out of it...And the few that still do it, change their minds after they hear the shitty sounds it creates....This guy said, "12 tweets, no bass" and I started laughing and calling him "stupid" while I pointed the finger at him.... while the last part is what I should have done....

the a/d/s/ PQ40.2 has a built in line output converter that accepts the ballanced differential output of the OEM head unit. be careful to get the .2 because the older PQ40 was supposed to have this feature but did NOT. I speak from personal experience.

the JL amps are supposed to have this as well.

in either case you WILL NEED TO CUT WIRES. check out my home page, there is some good E46 stereo info there.

Is the a/d/s jsut plug and play with the plug from the HK amp? I would think you still need to get power some where and ground the amp.
