My Ride: 2006 MINI Cooper S
My Sedan/Wife's Coupe

Even before taking delivery of my 03 sedan, I was making plans to replace the factory (non-HK) stereo. I own a recording studio, and do a lot of mix evaluation while I drive.

Imagine my horror at discovering that the installed system, with it's tri-amped front speakers, beefy midrange driver, and well-located speakers actually sounded very good. I don't know if something changed in 03, or if the planets were in alignment for the build of my car, but it has a very flat frequency response, great imaging, and solid bass down to about 70Hz.

I feel that any additional improvements would require a fair amount of work - to add an audiophile 3-way system in the front, or to extend the low frequency response, and probably something that I will not take on in the near future.

My wife's 03 M3 is an amazing machine, but I have a better stereo.

In her car l intend to leave the head unit, build/buy a differential signal interface, and replace the crossovers, amps, and speakers. I have been leaning toward 2-way products like the Diamond Audio HEX, but am concerned about loosing the midrange transducer.

Has anyone successfully put a 3-way system in the door of a coupe?

It appears that most commerical midrange transucers are 2"+ in diameter. Is it unrealistic to think that I can build an improved 3-way system with a midrange transducer as small as the one in the car right now?

Should I abandon my three-way thoughts, and just go for a high-end 2-way solution?

If I get this right, I might even get to drive the M3 from time to time...

Thanks for your thoughts.

Every time I drive her M3 it pretty much ruins my 325i driving experience for the next 2 weeks.

Of course, I have the Porsche...
