If the seat belts are attached directly to the seat in m3's then why does the pillar trim also have a spot for a belt?
Sedan seatbelt bases attach to the seat rail. Coupe (including M3) seatbelt bases attach to the car floor. That's why you have to swap rails, for the seatbelts to mount.

edit: The B-pillar trim is the other part of the car that the seatbelt mounts to. Then it triangulates at the buckle. hehe

I did an M3 seat swap into my 1999 328i. Plus steering wheel/airbag, side mirrors, side skirts, front strut bar, etc.

The seats i am interested in are from a convertible. that must be why the seat belts are connected directly to the top of the seats, because the m3 convertible does not have b pillars. thats why it did not make any sense to me. So, is there a way to retrofit convertible m3 seats into 330i sedan, and only have one seatbelt.

You can't "find" a pair, you have to grow them.
