I have a Pioneer DVD unit in my car so I am biased towards that, but that unit has some negatives. One, there is no volume control on the unit itself, you have to use your remote. Second, there are 2 seperate remotes, one for dvd function and the other for radio(this is the one with volume control on it), so when you are watching a dvd, you have to go back and forth on the remotes to turn the volume or do chapter searches. But overall it is a great unit. There is also the Kenwood unit, which I've heard great things about also.
As for speakers I heard nothing but great reviews about Focals, the owners of these speakers swear by them.

I don't personally have either of these units but they are pretty nice and I have heard good things about each...

Clarion VRX925VD
and
Pioneer AVXP7300DVD

look at focal speakers i love the polykevlar series

imo they are better than diamond audio. As far as amps xtant are great but big and require cleaning look into ppi and umm zapco. I personally went zapco.

The Pioneer is a nice unit (great picture quality) but the lack of volume controls and multiple remotes is a major turnoff. My g/f has the pioneer 7300dvd and we both can't stand using the thing. I have the Alpine Iva-c800 much easier to use but the picture quality isn't as good as the Pioneer. You do have to buy a separate DVD player or changer with the Alpine though. Also if you do plan on adding a navigation unit later the Alpine navigation beats out the Pioneer unit IMO.

I have the kenwood kvt-911dvd

It's awesome! I'm very happy with it. I mainly got it because right now it's the only touch-screen based player out there. Plus it has the DVD/CD/TV already inlcluded so there's no need to buy separtely. Volume controls can be found on the unit itself and on the remote. The picture qulaity is great, cept for maybe in direct sunlight. But you can always manually adjust the tilt, unlike the Pioneer. Here are some pics...

The Pioneer has the best picture, especially in direct sunlight. And you can adjust the tilt on the Pioneer.

Personally I like the kvt's tilt better than the pioneer...With the poineer you gotta hit the tilt button and it seems really hard to get it perfectly where you want it. It always jerks when you hit the tilt button, with the kvt you can tilt it with your hands. The pioneer isn't as bad as the alpine though....
