Decided to go through with the E46 M3 Engine Transplant => 323i...SMG/LSD/Engine PIX
So finally got my hands on a M3 motor/SMG/LSD/Cluster/seats...It's gonna be fun taking my car apart...Wish me luck, I'm gonna need a lot of it...=)
Cluster + LSD + rear suspension... Exhaust Pipes... Box of cables... M3 Seats... Steering Column DME/ECU/Top Damaged Engine... SMG Tranny SMG design is great...its actually just another module attached on to a manual tranny...so if you had SMG you could make it a 6speed... Spark Plug Chamber Head Double Vanos I thought installing a supercharger myself would be hard but it turned out, it's not so bad after all...of course this is a completely different...but who knows... |

holly ****! i wish i was that confident in my wrench skills.
that is quite a task, i have one question though. i do not mean to flame or put down or anything. i think what you are doing kickz ass, but how much did all of those parts alone cost you? and how do you know how to do that large of an install? i almost cried when i saw the smg and the LSD, but then the engine....whoah! best of luck, please keep us updated... ps...that your car in the sig? simply beautiful. |

Yep thats my car...just got it back...my waranty expired like 3 days ago...got a bunch of stuff replaced on the last day...new vanos unit also...hopefully someone will want to buy a 323i engine...only 35k miles on it too =)
Parts were pretty expensive...I'll release the prices when I finish the project...I kno I kno...cheaper if you bought a 2002 M3 for 35-40k...but no point in having another M3 in the family.... I actually don't know how to do a engine install...but I didn't know what a supercharger was either...Hopefully by the end of all of this I'll know the E46 down to each screw and bolt... |

yup, just read about everything on your cite. first off, let me say that i truly admire your willingness to learn and your diy diaries. you have done an excellent job in both the write ups and the installs. a supercharger install on your own is impressive in anyone's book!
when this is all said and done you will have the only e46 m3 i have ever heard of that is also a 4 door. good luck |

I'm sure there's gotta be a few 4door's that have done the swap but it must be rare...probably some in germany that we just don't know about? There's gonna be a few nice features in the conversion too...heated front seats...automatic on/off for xenon's...DSC III...plus the DME/ECU will actually accept the navigation as standard...
I always take a lot of pictures so don't worry about that part...and of course, tim, you can use the pictures...not a problem =) |

I'm going to have to replace a few things on the M motor to get it to work...Airbox....throttle bodies....injectors...anyone have any after market ideas? I'm thinking GruppeM intake...maybe a shark...what else is there for the M3? |

hey dude, ive done this swap in to a 325 ci before, but never seen it done in a 4 door, this is gonna be the ultimate sleeper. thats bad ass, as for the ideas, get a 3.91 differential, Shark engine software/ Dinan SMG software. change the intake & exhaust, just get a single port exhaust, that'll throw em off even more. good luck man, this is gonna be just about the sickest swap ive ever seen.

Change the 2 and the 3 around...332 would be unique. Sell off that s/c to get the money to do the install and upgrade suspension and brakes as needed with the new power

Are there advantages of having a front M3 suspension over a 323i front suspension? I'm already hoping my coils will fit in the rear...I definately need new brakes...=)
Anyone know of the M3 has more aggressive steering...if the rack turns faster on a m3? |

yes the steering ratio of an M3 is alot tighter, maybe by like 3/4 or 1 full of a turn lock to lock, its a BIG difference, also, the steering is variable at higher speed, and on top of all that, its 6 pounds lighter than your 323's.

and yes the suspension is better too, i dont know how it will react to that chassis,(being 4 doors instead of 2, and the wieght distribution difference), but yes the M3's suspension will definetley help handling and ride, it will also take all that hopping around from the SMG alot better too.

B-M3-W: So there are really two seperate issues...
1: The power steering on the M3 is 6 lbs lighter...if I don't change my steering column then I should keep the current feel correct? or is the power steering somewhere else? 2: The rack and pinion turns faster on the M3...If I want this...I just need to get an M3 rack/pinion correct? or where is the turning speed determined? |

2. and yes this is true, the steering speed is determined inside the column. theres a series of gears and the only thing that makes one different from the other is the ratio, the turn radius, and wheel well space will remain the same. the only difference is that you dont have to turn the M as far to get it to do what you want(alot crisper). then the M has the variable of course, but honestly, i have it on mine and its not that much of a difference on the variable, but the turning speed is alot more crisp. |

It's getting time to put all of this **** in...Doesn't it make sense to lift the car and then raise the engine? Since i am doing tranny...driveshaft..and everythign else? or is it still better to go from the top down...I'm not changing the front suspension (control arms...etc...)
Any one have any input..? also anyone know where to get a good engine cart? thx |

Nope...If i could get those parts then it wouldn't be on the list...that's the repair list...thats where having connections to the dealer helps a lot...even then its a lot of $$$
I'll be working on this project once a week....prolly on saturday...rebuilding the engine probably next week...then dropping it in one of the weeks after...all really depends on when the parts arrive... It's friday night we should all be clubbing anyways =) |
