Check engine light came on...

after i changed my oil. After I filled up my car with 6 qts of oil I started my car to get the oil circulating to see if I would need to add more. I let it run for a bit and then the check engine light came on. I forgot to put the oil cap back on! So I immediately turned off the engine and put the cap back on. Turned on the engine again and the light is still on. Will the light turn off automatically by itself or will I have to bring it to the dealership for them to reset it? Is it safe to assume that the only reason the light came on is because of the oil cap wasn't on when the engine was running? I didn't drive anywhere so that's a good thing.

It should go off in a couple days (after some regular number of engine starts). Mine went out (not due to the oil cap though). I put gas in on Sunday night, and the light didn't come on until the following Sunday night. I thought it was weird for it had been an actual week before the light came on. Then on Tuesday, I needed to get gas. After a few normal engine starts, the light went out. Just give it some time and see. If it doesn't go out, then you may want to check in with your dealer.

Make sure your gas cap thingy is closed tight!
