tire pressure?

what tire pressure should I keep my tires at? my owner's manual does not have the following sizes:

224/40/18 front
255/35/18 rear

I'm using Bridgestone S-03's

What's the best pressure for performance vs. maximizing tread life? or is it the same?

I think Gary@TireRack gave me 32(f), 38(r) when I e-mailed him a couple of weeks ago. I don't have the message where I am now, but I'm sure he'll chime in. I'm running the Michelin Pilot Sport 2 (225/40/18 front, 255/35/18 rear).

What year/model E46?

It's a 2000 323ci with sport package

and I'm using stock wheels, 18x8 front and 18x8.5 rear

BMW recommends 29front 33psi rear. You may use higher psi if you wish to increase steering response, but watch for more rapid wear in the center ribs if you do so.
