how to get a duplicate key, without dealing with the dealer

hello to all
last night I went to supermarket and ran into a friend, while talking to him,I unlocked my front passenger door, got a pen to write a note, started the car, from passenger seat and got out, closed the door,by the time I walked around, the door locked on me,with car running and no spare key,so can anyone recommend how to get a duplicate key, without dealing with the dealer.
thanks
Nelson

As far as I know you cannot avoid the dealer for a new key.

You don't have to "deal with the dealer", and by that I assume you mean going in person or paying the markup.

Search for the big key thread that's here somewhere. 130 or so bucks and you get to order online.

If you want a new key that will start the engine, then you have to deal with a BMW dealer (doesn't have to be the local one), or get an ak90 key programmer and dive in deep. It's cheaper to buy a key from an on-line dealer.
If you just want a key that will unlock the doors via the remote buttons, you can buy a cheap one on the internet and program it in. Note, that you have to already be inside the car with a working key to be able to make the new remote work, and it won't work to start the car.
If you just want a new key that will mechanically unlock the driver's door (but will never start the car), then you can buy a blank and try to find a locksmith that can cut it. Note that you will need a working key for him to copy.

As he doesn't have any additional keys (otherwise he could get in the car) I think the only option is to break into the car or get a new key from the dealer.

Why not get a valet key from the dealer? Order a spare fob key online later.

Lol is the car still idling? And why do you not have a spare key. An emergency spare at the very least. Facepalm.

LMFAO. So you just let it sit like that until it ran out of gas?

Quick question, I just want to confirm with someone who has more experience. If I bought this key for the $160 will everything work fine once I do the programming like they say? So the car will start, doors unlock, etc. And also will it come cut or will I have to still find someone to cut it.

Yes, it will work and it will already be cut. The only thing you will have to do is to program the car to accept the remote (lock, unlock, trunk) signals from it. You can turn the key and start the car as soon as you get it.

Yeah but the burning question is did you have to let the car idle until it ran out of gas. That's what we all want to know at this point. And then, with the ignition in the run position, did your battery die as well, since you probably had the radio on and perhaps the climate control.
