curious to know this myself , becuase this mean bmw knows of the issue and has taken action to fix it , which would give us a claim for a recall on all other e46 models.

1999 BMW 328i Rear Subframe problem

Hello BMW owners,
Right before Christmast I noticed a knocking noise coming from the driver’s side rear suspension area of my 2000 BMW 328i. I was concerned so I took it too the dealership to have them inspect it. After a quick inspection I was told by the representative that there was some tearing where the frame and body come together and that this is common on cars that are being driven too hard.

Is this issue as common as the rep made it out to be? I am quite concerned as I have not driven this car hard and I do not understand what could have caused this to happen under standard “wear and tear” circumstances.

Has anyone seen or heard a similar problem? Does anyone know a good attorny?

Mine looked EXACTLY like the ones in the pictures a couple posts up. I went to my local dealer (The BMW Store here in Cincinnati), and told my service rep that this was unacceptable, and that whether or not my car was out of warranty, this was a safety issue and a result of poor engineering. Don't ask, tell them. Make sure you get across it's a safety issue. Good luck.

I agree. Be firm, but not rude. Remember, your service advisor is your advocate with BMWNA. If you piss him off, you will have a harder time. I would recommend dealing with the service supervisor instead of one the lower level service advisors. Pointing out that BMWNA has paid for subframe repairs for other customers will benefit your case as well if you can provide any sort of proof.

Yes, get the service supervisor on your side and then contact BMWNA HQ. Took me less than a week before BMW told me they would cover it on my car that was already out of warranty and a second owner car.
The mech to me that I tracked the car but he couldn't prove it b/c it would have showed on my oem suspension, tires, tranny, etc. and he couldn't prove it so it was back to square one on how this happened and he now looked like a dumb a$$.

If anyone is looking for a good mechanic in the New Jersey area to fix subframe damage (since this is a job that should be done by a reputable mechanic) you guys should check out Mario Lomedico's shop in Shrewbury, NJ. The mechanic Emilio worked at Ferari in Italy for about 15 years, then moved to Britain to work at Rolls Royce, and now works at Mario Lomedico's shop (the shop works primarily on Ferrari, Rolls Royce, and Bimmers)

They are very qualified for the job, and are really great honest guys. He originally told me the job would be a little over $3k, and he called me this morning telling me it would be ready monday morning and he was only charging me $1400. I really appreciated that since I woulda paid the $3k w/o contest.

They are also real professional in the shop, and the place is immaculate. The garge has 6 bays, the floors are all ceramic tile, and the place is spotless (the garage is nicer than some restaurants ive been too, lol). If you looked at Emilio, you would never guess he was a mechanic. Well spoken, and well dressed even while working, and not a spot on him. They also detail your car for you if it's there for more than 2 or 3 days which is fockin awsome.

I'm real happy with this place as you can see. They now do the work on my whole family's cars and all of my company cars as well (20+ cars).

If anyone goes there, mention the Greco's sent you. Def get a better price.

this is becoming a real issue.

a recent article in the roundel describes possible solutions: turner motorsports reinforcement kit (kit cheap, labour insane), and a quick epoxide foam fixe, supposedly performed by dealers according to a tech bulletin sent out by bmw.

anyone knows about this bulletin, or has a copy?????

Guys thanks for all this information. I was having my 1999 328i serviced at a dealer here in the UK, so the guy calls me up and says they have found a crack in the subframe by the rear axle mounting during the underbody inspection. They said they are talking to BMW in Germany about it but I should be prepared that I might have to pay all or some of the huge bill. I was shocked to say the least but I found this thread and a few more after some searching.
I printed our your list and then went to see the Service Manager and very politely told him I won't be paying any of this, even if BMW don't pay a portion I would go to the small claims court to recover the rest. But before I said this he basically said BMW should cover 100% of the cost (they were just waiting for confirmation) and they gave me a car for 2 weeks while the work is being done. Both the dealer and BMW seemed very keen to keep me happy about this. If I didn't find this thread though I wouldnt have understood that this is a design/manufacturing flaw and I wouldn't have had the confidence to demand that they cover all the cost of repair.
This just demonstrates that BMW are aware that this problem exists and that it is their responsibility to fix it. I asked them why it has not been the subject of a recall and they said in the UK they need a certain number of cases before a recall is done.
Anyway please add me to the list and make sure that you are insistent about this if you are unfortunate enough to suffer it:

Has anyone dealt with Atlanta dealerships trying to fix this problem for free?
I haven't checked my car yet, but when it's gonna be in BS hopefully next week I'll make them check it.

Has this been reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration??

Has this been reported to the NHTSA?? http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov I'm sure they would be pretty interested in the unsafe conditions these cars represent...
I'm certain BMW would not want the 'black eye' a formal investigation.
How about a class action?? Would be a Public relations nightmare that would certainly make BMW reconsider...
