I just got an email from the NHTSA asking for more information into the problem!!!!! Maybe somehting is finally going to happen with this. If you haven't lodged a formal complatint with them you should go to the website and do it. The more evidence they have, the better chance that something willl happen...

My Ride: a car
I should be on the list 2.

2000 323ci , 5speed manual. 90k rear drivers side beginning to tear on rear passenger...

Fyi, no body shop around here would do fix it and my tears were to large for the turnermotorsport kit anyway. My father had to fabricate His own and weld it himself. It turned out for the better but still If he coudln't do it my car would of been gone.

Exclamation Just fix it yourself

OK...ok, I know that not everyone has the resources to do this but I did this weekend. I was able to weld everything back together and all works and looks well. I have attached some pics. If anyone want to know everything involved or would like addtional pics. Please let me know.,

Did you also add the TMS reinforcement plates while you were repairing it?

I am not sure what you are refering to when you say TMS but here is what I did:

I first removed the diff. and sway bar. Then dropped the subframe down about 8" for reinforcement I cut a few holes in the trunk and welded a piece of 1/8" plate steel to the inside body mount(below trunk level but above the mount)and then welded the mount to that. After that I ground down the old body steel (really thin) and tacked a piece of 1/16" plate molded to the outer steel and the inter bracket. Then just put it all back together.

Works great.

TMS = Turner Motorsports. They sell some plate reinforcements that you weld onto the frame of the car where the subframe mounts. Great job with the fix. If i could weld, i would have tried to fix this myself too.

I first removed the diff. and sway bar. After that I ground down the old body steel (really thin) and tacked a piece of 1/16" plate molded to the outer steel and the inter bracket. Then just put it all back together.

Works great.

Concerned future buyer!?

Judging by the list not to many 330i/Ci's had subframe damage. I noticed two 2001's and one 2002. Is this a problem that has been corrected with the newer e46's? Or are not enough people aware that it exsists? Please let me know.

Thanks,
Eric

I guess I thought this was a serious problem, maybe I am wrong?

Are these cars tracked?

Cool Bmw Ante Up!

You have to love the power of the internet......I would certainly hope BMW would do the right thing. This is a product reliablility issue....BMW will ultimately be responsible.....

The problem is mainly with MY 1999 and 2000 3-series coupes with manual transmission, but also affects sedans and automatic transmission cars. It's said the BMW received weak pieces of sheet metal during that period of construction.

You don't want the turner motorsports kit if your frame is allready ripped. The kit is meant to be a reinforcement not a fix.

anywhere your taking the car for welding work should be able to cut you some plates and weld them as well. since everyone's tear is different, making a custom plate (as the gentleman above did) is the right answer.

For those of you that have this problem, I would HIGHLY recommend going into a reputable dealer, and while being incredibly respectful, tell them what is wrong, you know it's a common problem, and that you feel that it is a safety hazard that BMW has overlooked and is deserving of a recall. You don't have to mention anything about suing, or make any demands that they fix it for free, so you avoid that "do what I say" confrontation but get your point across that you want it fixed.

I had good luck with that method.
