You could do it that way. Depending on the output on the head unit you are using, your results might vary. To do it right, you need an adaptor.

what type of adapter?
I want at least the same sound quality as my current setup. I am looking to install the KVT-915DVD but I am hearing mixed things about running through the stock HK amp and double amping, and introducing distortion.

Double amping is usually not good. The HK has a variable input so it will accomodate.
I tried it and didnt like it. I ripped everything out and ran new everything. Now I am happy. Try it. If you like it - good, if not then you can try something else.

If you want better sound quality, your approach might not be the best one. By only upgrading the head unit, at best, you will have the same quality as with the factory head unit. You will not get better sound quality or more power than what you already have.
You might want to consider either upgrading the whole thing, or replacing amps/speakers with aftermarket. |

yeah
I am not looking for specially better sound, I am content for the sound quality now, I just don't want it degraded. If I bypass the HK amp, don't I need new speakers too since the HK uses different ohms?

What are you trying to improve? You want more bass, louder stereo, more features (i.e. xm radio, mp3 player)? |
