proper cornering???

this isnt related too much to racing but i figured its best to post here


Last night I was driving home after a late class. some banged up car was going really slow in front of me. i took care to not tailgate so i was just cruising slowly distance back. all of a sudden he takes off and takes a corner 10 feet ahead , I notice something fell off his car thought it was bag of crap or pizza box or something but i realized too late two of his crummy rims came off. I thought I was safe BUT no the stupid rims hit the curb and freaking roll back towards the middle of the road. Im going about 25-35 (Its a very sharp turn about 90 ) I instinctively hit the braKes and pull into the oncoming traffic lane. i noticed no cars of couse but i did a horrible turn, came out too wide screeched and worst off those rims scratched my sideskirts.

alot of people claim to know good and proper driving techniques so if you experienced drivers could give some good advice on control through turns and swerving??

hopefully i wont get flamed for asking.

It's definitely good to ask. I doubt anyone will flame you, don't listen if they do.

My experience is limited to a few autocrosses and road course events. I haven't ever done a defensive driving course or car control clinic where they might focus on accident avoidance. I can however think of two things that would be helpful. One - look ahead. Look as far ahead as you can. Start doing this on the road all of the time so that when you need to be doing it, you are. The reason for this is to avoid any upcoming surprises. If you're focusing on the road 30 feet in front of you (and no farther) you may make a decision that will put you in danger 45 feet down the road (imagine a curb or pedestrian). Imgane you swerve to go around something and find yourself in the other lane, like it sounds like you did. Do you have to get back into your lane immediately, or can you take your time, regain your composure and be relaxed about it? Are you on a collision course with a fire hydrant? Looking ahead not only helps with the first decision (getting around the obstacle), but also with getting back on track.

The second thing that helps is to be as smooth as possible with the steering wheel. The way to maximise the grip in your tires is to work up to their maximum load SMOOTHLY. As smoothly as possible. You won't get 100% grip by just cranking the wheel over as fast as possible. Whipping the wheel around upsets the left/right and front/rear balance of the car. Not only do you give up potential cornering force, but it's possible upset the car so much you could lose control and be in a really bad situation. Try slowing down your inputs on the road everywhere. In lane changes, turning into parking lots so that the input builds gently and consistently. Being smooth is benefited greatly by looking ahead. If you're going to slow down the inputs your feeding in, you have to be planning and executing them further in advance because they can take longer.

Find an autocross nearby and go do it. Typically there's a slalom (at least in courses local to me), and that's an element that seems useful in accident avoidance. Actually doing it yourself will mean far more than replies in this forum!
