53k Miles
Major problem: Subframe ripped 100 other minor issues all replaced under warranty (like cam senors, thermostats, radio problems, random electrical issues, xenon blasts.... No issues right now... besides gluing my door seals back together. My car's been a lot more reliable ever since the warranty ended. (knock on wood)

Late March '00 production
51,442 miles currently Major problems: Clutch bad (not abused) as of November 2003, at ~38,000 miles. Other recent issues to date: repeated window regulator failures (most recent: rear driver, Oct 2004, front passenger, May 2004, rear passenger, April 2003) sunroof shade jammed and replaced Aug 2003, exhaust camshaft sensor Sep 2003. Control arm bushings and ball joints in need of replacement by around 50,000 miles/Aug 2004. To give you an idea of how the car has been driven: approx. 15-20,000 highway miles (est). 20,000-25,000 easy city miles (long, smooth, straight roads, stoplights only once every two or three miles on average). 5,000 hard city miles (hills, lots of turns, stoplights every half mile to mile). 200-300 track miles. It hasn't really led a hard life.

2001 325ci 52k
Engine failure. Dealer claims it was due to over rev. But It was NOT. Had it taken to an indy shop. They replaced my engine and looked at the old one. They say it was with the vanos unit and it advancing the timing. minor things include speaker rattles, trim cracking x3, And a head light relay failure which caused my headlights to go on/off at random. Even with me not in the car and no key there. Rough Idle, sputtering, and engine shutting off on some rare occasions. Door locks not locking or unlocking. ...

2004 330 xi 3,100miles.
-Brakes Vibrating -Auto Door Locks do not always open the passenger and rear doors. 2001 330ci 49,000 miles -Front Bumper replaced in firts 6 months (clip broke - covered under warranty) -Stearing Colum Replaced in first year (making noise during low speed turns - covered under warranty, the bad news is this took 3-4 service visits for them to resolve and correct) -Stalling problem (not sure what the cause was but this took several appointments to correct - again) -Window Trim Replaced, at 45,000 miles (fell off drivers door - that I did trying to put funrniture in the car - covered under warranty) -3 out of four 17" stock wheels were bent - my fault for living in NJ I guess, but HORRIBLE that I could destroy them. -SOLD (actually traded in) at 49,000 miles because the warranty was running out and I would have to get new brakes soon. I also wanted something safer in the snow for when we have kids, since the wife drives to work now. Honestly, I still loved that car! It was much more fun than my XI and even with the laundry list of problems, I still felt like the car would run forever. I miss it, but the new car smell is great.

If any potential BMW owner stumbles upon this thread, I have a feeling its going to discourage a lot of people from buying a new or used BMW...

November 2002 build date, 24k miles, no major issues (03 325i with the SP).
At my two year check up a few weeks ago my pads light was on and they replaced the pads, rotors and sensor, and I had them try to stop the ebrake squeek (moderate success there). Other than that, it's been a-ok. |

A.)My 2001 did have some problem which were covered by warranty, but if I lived in a warmer climate I would have never traded it in. I honestly just wanted a better car in the snow. B.)This is now my fouth 3-series and when the lease on our ML is up we are getting a 2006 325 wagon. Also, if I wanted a car that never had to see the inside of a shop I would get a Japanese car. My wife had a 2001 TL and the only thing she had to do was change the oil. Every BMW I have owned has been in the shop for one reason or another. Every single repair has been FULLY covered by BMW and I have always received a loaner. A BMW is a car that enjoys being driven and driven hard, so minor adjustment can be expected. BMW will never claim to have Japanese quality and most consumers are aware of that.

I've got a 2001 330i 5 speed with 27k on it right now, not a thing wrong.
My old 1996 E36 328i with 173k on it, only had a bad radiator, clutch and the normal wear parts replaced. I don't know why people have so many problems with windows! Stop pouring coffee onto the switches LOL
