I'm obviously not religious, but I still celebrate christmas. It's just a nice time of year. School is out and you're with family. But I have noticed recently that commercials are suddenly becoming more politically correct. Even ESPN is getting in on the act of morphing the three major winter solstice religious hollidays into one word. I think Stuart Scott called it, 'kwachristmaka'.

Happy kwachristmaka.

What the fVck is Xmas?

Christmas is a great time of year, as long as you can stomach the commercialism and uber-PC crap.

Personally, I've developed a negative attitude towards Christmas over the years. I hate to admit it, but it seems like 95% of "Christmas" is:
--year-end scrambling at the office (the 4th is our busiest quarter and December is the busiest month)
--goddamned commercials selling me Christmas deals on cars, mattresses, cat food, vacuum cleaners, and toys
--scheduling conflicts and odd familial logistic issues
--news reports about the eternal battle between the forces of Kwanza and Christ (or at least eternal since 1966 AD...LOL)
--goddamn pine needles all over my anally-retentive hyper-clean house
--spend spend spend because everybody is conditioned to receive receive receive

Only 5% of Christmas is quality time with family, a break from work, seeing my daughter's eyes light up with the magic of Santa, the concept of giving as opposed to receiving, and a reflection on peace, love, and happiness & religion (if that's your thing).

I'm late as always joining the discussion.

My wife is Muslim, but I'm not. We celebrate Christmas annually. Not neccessarily for religious purposes, but because it's such a wonderful time of the year to be together with family and friends, and to share in the tradition of giving. I know this sounds cliche, but it's why we celebrate. When we have kids, and my wife does intend to raise them as Muslims BTW, I refuse to deny them the opportunity to enjoy the holidays. Christmas particularly.

But I like getting out of work and seeing family.

I know many jews and atheists who allow their children to celebrate xmas because it's cruel to have them miss out on this magical time of year.

You really really have to be a cruel and miserable person if you think someone celebrating xmas in front of you is offending your non-christian beliefs.

Merry Christmas!

Happy New Year, too!

If someone wants to wish me well on the basis of their religion, why argue with that? What is so offensive about that? We need more mutual generosity of spirit, not less.

I think it is nice that someone wishes me a happy Hanukkah or Kwanzaa or Ramadan? or whatever. It silly to be offended by a holiday.
