LED Bulbs and Flickering Issues

I used to have LED bulbs in my rear turnsignals (before switching to OEM LEDs) and every now and then they would flicker. I guess the car was sending some current through them to make sure they were not burnt. From what I've heard, other people have had this happen too. Is there any way to avoid this, like a module or something you can hook up to stop this from happening? The reason I ask is that I'm probably going to switch my center brake light to the clear lens (convertibles only) and I was thinking about going with the LED one instead of the neon one. I don't want to get my computer reprogrammed to accept them because they're gonna charge me like $50 for it and was just thinking of throwing the load equalizers on it to trick the computer, but I dont want flickering. So, any way to stop the flickering?

Did you pull fuse #32? Do you have the fast blinker problem? I had to pull fuse number 32 and add some resistors inline. At start-up if you haven't seen the back of your car, it does three fast strobes. Then after that, it pulses every 30 seconds or so. Read this thread(click Link) and look at what I did on page 4. Mine work flawlessly. Hope this helps and ask me specific questions if needed after you read. I'm happy to help.
LED retrofit

oh snap! that thread helps a LOT! thanks a bunch, i'll try out the capacitor trick, but i wont be able to do it until the end of May (still in NY for college )

also, this is not for my blinkers, its for the center brake light for convertibles. i want to retrofit the clear LEDs but i dont want to pay a bunch of money to get my software updated

I'm not sure if you'd need to do anything to the third brakelight. isn't yours already clear LED, mine are and they are stock, the Bentley manual also shows the third brakelight being LED. So even if they were a little different looking, the LEDs of the stock system would/should have the same resistance. Look at your third brakelight again, pretty sure you'll find it's already a LED bar. Keep me/us posted.

nope, i have a 2001 convertible M3. its a red lens with a neon tube. in mid 2002 i believe they changed it to a clear lens with a neon tube, then in about 2004 they changed it to a clear lens with LEDs. Heres how it is now and how i want it to be (steel gray is my sisters, hers is a 2004. titanium silver is mine)

Does that car give you a lights out error if the 3rd light goes out? If not, you won't have to worry about the flickering problem because the computer will not be looking to see if the bulb's out

.... just a thought

i was thinking that too. since its a neon tube, will it be checking to see if its burnt every 30 seconds? i really dont know, so i guess we'll just have to wait and see

Older cars (2001ish?) need their Lichtschalterzentrum (light module with the turn knob) exchanged, if you go LED, asfaik.

You'll also have to check to see if it's 12volts. The carpet isn't hard to take off, and unplugging the light is even easier (you'll need a torx head screw driver to remove some plastic under the trunk lid carpet before you can unplug the light.

check out this post for more information on the flickering. You could use the same wiring for your car
