330xi with M68 wear pattern

Hello Everyone,

I'm in the market to put on a set of M68 rims with Pilot Sports. In Canada here, the sports package for the XI includes these rims/tires. I'm wondering what your experiences are with tire wear between front and rear tires. For example does the fronts wear faster than the rears? I've done a search but couldn't find anything specific for the XI.
Given that the fronts are 225/45/17 and the rears are 245/40/17 and the torque split is biased to the rear, would they wear evenly? I'm worried about having transfer case issue down the road.
Can anyone let me know what should I expect?

Thanks for all your help.

Cheers,
../E40six

I have m68's with pilot sports at 15,000 miles and so far they're wearing evenly.

i have a 330i with M68 staggered rims so i don't know how the tread wear will be on the xi, but i can tell you that the rears on my car lasted 26k while the fronts made it up to 39k before replacement (2/3 ratio) with the original contis.

this is not as good an indication how they would wear on an xi but my guess is that the rears will probably last 1/4 less than the fronts.

from what I know, the 4 wheels have to be the same for the Xi. ur setup may not be be that great to the x-drive

snewcrash and blkonblk... he needs XI owners to chime in. RWD cars wear differently then an AWD system, so your experiences wont help much.

Thanks very much, I know everyone is trying to help. I'm really looking for experiences from XI owners with staggered setups. Running staggered configuration precludes me from doing any tire rotation. This is what i'm worried about. Once the overall tire diameter differs from front to rear, it starts putting wear on the transfer case. I'm hoping they will wear evenly given they are factory sports package wheels in Canada. However, I remember reading that M68 staggered wheels are not an option on XI models in the US. I wonder why this is?

Thanks again everyone for you input.

I don't think there are any XI's with the the staggered setup on this forum. At least I haven't come across any posts stating such.

Sift through this long thread for some discussions on staggered setup for the XI (if you haven't done so already)
http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=152377

While a staggered setup may look great it doesn't help the handling at all. It will only make the XI understeer even more.

I believe it's not worth the hassle to go through the staggered setup and worry about it over just getting 4 of the same wheels.

but come to think about it, the xi suggests using different tire pressure for front and rear while my A4 requires me to have all 4 wheels with exactly the same pressure. with that maybe the x-drive can tolerate certain degree of "staggeredness".

Where r u Steelbluexi?

I stand corrected. Cyber Pete has a 325xi with a staggered setup.

I haven't had any issues with my staggard setup on the XI. The main reason that I figured it was okay to go this route was as someone else mentioned Canada dealers sell the XI with a staggard setup. As it stands now I burn through one setup of GS-D3's every summer.

Mine are getting close to being done. I have ~14k on them. They'll get me through this summer, but that's about it.

So I guess you do approx. twice the driving I do. I love taking the train to work.

Yeah man 65k miles in a little over 2 years. Doing AutoX and Watkins Glen didn't help last year. I had flat tire last week that couldn't be plugged. I had 50% tire wear on the tires. What really sucked was I had to buy 4 new tires.

Since you can buy the wheels in any size, get the same size all around.
That way you can rotate and balance on a regular basis and get maximum performance and wear.

That staggered setup is a bit over the top (as benefits are questionable) on a daily driver sedan, especially on an AWD setup.

i've also been wondering about having m68's on my xi...I'm actually thinking of going with this setup:

225/45R 17 in front and 255/40R 17 in the rear

that seems like the best setup (to preserve the AWD) according to those tire-calc sites. anyone have any ideas about this?

At $180 a piece to boot. That sucks dude.

Did you have the tire rack insurance at least? That would have paid for some if it...

I have the following setup with a slightly lower suspension and I don't have any rubbing nor did I need to roll my fenders.

18 X 8.5 with 225/40-18
18 x 9 with 245/35-18 rear

MBixler has an XI with 19's that are wide I'd do a search on his name.

I didn't know what the road hazzard insurance was at the time so I didn't buy it! I did get somewhat of a discount but not anywhere close to the 50% I would have gotten if I had the hazzard insurance.
