E46 On-Board Computer

I just purchased a 2005 325i that unfortunately does not have an on-board computer (OBC). I have gotten mixed signals from the dealer as to whether the OBC option can be added or not. I find it hard to believe that installation is much beyond a new turn signal stalk and plug-in to an existing harness. I would appreciate any insight or experience anyone has on this topic.

The word "there" can appear as a pronoun, as in “over there."

"Their" is a possessive pronoun. In a phrase like “Susan and Bill's car,” it could be used to to make a new phrase: “their car.”

”They're” is a contraction of “they are.” “They are” should always be able to replace “they're.”

Extra Credit: It's "I'm looking for an M3"
not "I'm looking for a M3".

It's as simple as buying the $60 stalk and having the ECU flashed. Total cost should be less than $100.

You'll notice that if you access the hidden OBC codes, your car already tracks fuel efficiency/range/temperature etc regardless of whether or not you have the so-called "on-board computer." It's just another example of BMW nickel and diming the customer.

Thanks for the information. Is ambient temperature also already available, or will I also need to add a temperature sensor/harness?

I just called the local BMW dealer (The BMW Store - Cincinnati) today for this part. The price of the turn signal stalk with the OBC button is $107 after 20% BMW Club discount. I did not get the P/N, but I will post after I pick the part up. Thanks to akhbhaat's advice, I verified the existance of an ambient temp probe (forward of driver's side front wheel under bumper).

Just completed the OBC install project today, and it works great....Outside air temperature, MPG, Range, average speed, and clock. The turn signal stalk with OBC switch is P/N 61-31-8-363-668. The dealer performed a reflash (turn signal retrofit) today, and bingo, OBC option is now available for a total project cost of less than $150. Thanks everyone for your help on this project.

This is sweet! Mine did not come with the ODC either, and I have wanted it for a long time. I will be doing this soon. Is changing the stalk an easy DIY?

The OBC turn signal stalk retrofit is a pretty straight forward DIY. Go to http://64.177.26.92/DIY_M3_Wheel.htm for a good step by step on removing the airbag/steering wheel. The OBC stalk interface (photo below) is identical to the non-OBC, so it's a simple plug and play replacement. Do a search on "OBC" in E46fanatics, and K-Man has a good overview of the retrofit with instructions for the dealer to do the reflash. The hardest part was convincing the dealer that the reflash would work, since they were convinced that I would need $2,000 of parts (new harness, new display screen, temp probe, etc.) to make OBC work! You have to bring the reflash instructions with you to the dealer, otherwise the dealer will claim that they have no idea how to activate the OBC stalk. OBC was the only option I wanted that my new 325i did not have (has the important stuff - sports pkg, manual, etc). When I add the $150 to my $28,000 purchase price, I still think I did pretty well to get one of the last E46's. Also added iPod adaptor kit myself thanks to instructions on E46fanatics.com!

Smile Another Retrofitted OBC is Born

Thanks for this great thread! I just had it done on my 2005 325i, all by the dealer. I probably overpayed a bit (total about $280) for the stalk, installation, and programming. The dealer seemed a bit skeptical until I handed him a copy of the instructions, then it all went smoothly. Well worth the cost.

Akhbhaat car is a 2000 323i so yes it will work on earlier cars.

The packaging of the OBC is a bit funny, I have one because I have the premium package, but if you got the sport package without the premium you wouldnt get the OBC. It might have changed now but it should have been standard, or at least included whether you got the sport or premium package.
