Is saturday a business day for banks?

For example, if a wire transfer was placed, will it also be processed on saturday, or will it carry over to Monday?

Saturday is not a business day at any bank. Although many banks are open for business.

To illustrate this: If you have a hold placed for a certain number of days, you would not count Saturday or Sunday. Anything that gets deposited or posted on saturday is as if you are depositing on Monday (the next business day).

Wire transfer will be sent out monday, the systems dont even allow us to send wires on saturday even if we wanted to.

That completely depends on the transaction type and if the deposit or withdrawl of money is in the best interest of the bank. I worked for Wells Fargo up until a few months ago. They have 5 different divisions between the Wells Fargo brand Mortgage, Portfolio Mgt, Savings, Commercial and I forget the last one. Anyway they do and will process on Saturdays. Sometimes it will seem inconsistent though in the case of ACH transfers because the receiving institution also has to accept on Saturday and it also depends on the cutoff time from East to West coast. If both will transact business on Saturday your transaction will post. If you withdraw money from one account to the next within Wells it depends on whether the sweep had already gone into effect on Friday or Saturday as to whether you actually see a post. The sweep is what banks do with your money when it sits in your non-interest bearing checking account. They pool the non-interest bearing money and put it in a interest bearing account over night and draw the interest off of it. Businesses can take advantage of this too depending on the type of account you have your money in. They call them sweep accounts. Mortgage payments will post on Saturday and if posted before 3:30pm CST it will move from your account too, if you bank with Wells.
