Bentley book

Do any of you have the bentley book for 99-01 3 series e46 CD-ROM? Can you tell me how thorough it is? And... if you have the 99-05 E46 book, which is newer than the CD-ROM, how does it compare. I am looking to buy and would prefer the CD-ROM, but want to make sure that it is all inclusive of the book.

Also, Bentley is sold out of the ROM, any good ideas where to get such an item besides from Bentley?

Thanks guys. I appreciate it.
Michael.

i don't recommend the CD-Rom. the liscense only allow 3 or 4 liscense transfer in 2 years, which can become a pain in the butt if you ever need to more that software from one computer to another or from one HD to another. i'm already down to my last transfer and i've only had mine for less than one year. also, each time you transfer the liscense, you have to do it through the phone. as for whether the CD-Rom is as comprehensive as the book, i don't know.

btw, you can buy either the book or CD from BimmerZone. it's tax free and if you make a purchase of at least $75 or $80 (i forget the exact amount) you get free shipping. what i did was buy an oil filter or 2 along with my bentley CD till the total adds up to $80.

The BMW ETK software is readily available on EBay and I would imagine some members have it as well. The COMPLETE suite would include ETK (aka EPC - parts catalogue), TIS (Tech Info including repair instructions, documents, torque specs, tech bulletins, etc) and the newer WDS DVD (wiring information including diagrams, pinouts, etc). There's another CD as well that has accessory install docs (can't remember the name).

Be sure if you find a set that it has the years you are looking for (since some are quite out of date) AND that they include E46 in all the suites - some packages do not have wiring for the E46.

I have the CD, and regret getting it. Wish I had the book. It is sometimes hard to find information on both the CD and the book, but it is a lot easier to "browse" the book.

True. I regret buying the CD. CD is much cheaper but if I would to do it again I would buy the book.

CD has too many restrictions and you can't really "browse" it

bentley book

Thanks very much for the info. Bentley was sold out anyway. But the stuff I needed to know was answered here. You guys are the best.

What is ETK? Is this other than Bentley?

Bentley book

Coooooooolllllll! Bimmer zone was the DAD!

So much cheaper than Bentley, no tax, no shipping cost. I think I am going to go with the book... but will wait until Mark chimes in again about what ETK is. I dont want to miss out on anything.

Thanks man.

ETK/TIS is the software system BMW uses - if you check out the screen they use to search for parts at the parts counter, it is just like the screens you see in ETK. It is installed software, except for WDS which is essentially quasi-PDF files with a special reader. Hell if you were local I'd cut you a set - they're out there all over the place, I can't believe more people don't use them.

Do a search on EBay for "BMW ETK" and you'll see what I mean - keep in mind those are all likely burned copies, and most don't come with the WDS DVD which has the electrics for the E46. As long as you are good with that, you'll pick up a set for like 10 to 15 bucks. The WDS is harder to come by though.

instead of ETK, you can always use RealOEM. it's essentially the same parts screen that the dealer sees on their computer...as far as i can tell.

realoem.com is awesome, I use it all the time for price estimates and of course part numbers. The only bad thing is that you can't zoom in like the dealers software can.

I got my Bentley book from amazon.com. It was like $87 shipped.
