Thanks eso123.
I toyed with it this morning and concluded that my noise is indeed the heater blower fan making the noise...and yes, the noise is most directly coming from behind the center console. Looks like I've got a fun weekend ahead of me sometime in the next couple of months. |

My 03' just started making the cricket noisse about a week ago, ordered part, installed, noise gone. Thx for the DYI. One question I did have???? While I was in the middle of replacing the fan, I thought, what would happen if you just unplugged the fan when it started making noise and didnt replace it, just left it unplugged. Does anybody know???

Nobody knows if you could just unplug the blower in question and leave it. What is the role of this little blower fan in the big picture of the ac/heater system?

I believe this fan is the CPU cooler. Blows the cooler internal air onto the computer box or something...

My cricket noise goes off when climate control is off.. Did I read it correct, that this is the more technical & expensive fix?
My cricket is adjustable.. As I accelerate the fan it accelerates it's chatter.. Eventually silencing near full speed.. This makes me feel important.. Like I lead my own cricket orchestra. Ha ha humor thu aggregation.. |

This is my first post and a huge thank you to samytampafl for this DIY and the excellent description that helped me find it. Seriously I could not be more appreciative. Bought the part, installed myself that day and have been blissfully cricket-free for almost a month now. That intermittent noise had been compromising my sanity for a few years. No mechanic ever had any idea what I was talking about.
And the skin on my knuckles has finally grown back so everything's good! |

The cricket sound comes from under the drivers side foot area, above the pedals and under the plasitc panel. It doesnt fluctuate with the cars acceleration. It comes and goes while stationary. It makes noise even when the climate control is turned off. Your description sounds like its coming from the center blower. This sound is something different.

So what would the part number be for 2002 330xi? And how much would it cost?

What do you expect? If you're installing a new part then it will work unless it's factory defective.
This fan is not controlled by the climate control system. From what I remember reading it's triggered by temperature inside the ECU box. If your "cricket" shuts off when you turn off the climate control then your AC/heater blower is the problem. Similar noise but different fan motor.

Thanks for the post. I have been trying to figure out what this noise was that started a week after I bought my car! Now I just need to buy the part. Does anyone have any suggestions on where the best place to buy inexpensive part would be? Also, I have a '03 330xi.

Is it the blower motor? A lot of mechanics have told me that is what it is. Is the picture for step 5 what it looks like?

NO. It is NOT the blower motor. Its a cooling fan for the cpu. The blower motor is something different and located behind your center vents. If thats what your mechanic says, than maybe you have a different problem. The noise would be from the CENTER of the dash, NOT the LOWER driver foot area.
