I know this is old as the internet, but this is terrible logic for any new members reading this thread.

Risk is not figured into this equation. Also, maintenance and depreciation are not figured into this equation.

What if you lose your job and have your $40,000 locked in a 7% CD? The second you jerk it out you will lose a ton of interest earnings in penalties and then...you have a car payment to deal with too that you have been paying interest to the bank the whole time!

My parents usually pay cash for all their cars. We did pay cash for our E46, along with our other BMW's too. I don't drive yet or make my own salary so I can't comment on myself.

Over 6 years ago I traded my 98 e36 M3 which they gave me 12,500 for it and I got a 03 e46 M3 they listed for 43,000 which I talked them down to 38,000. It was still under factory warranty and had 30k miles at the time. I paid the difference in cash! : ) No car payment is like having a one night stand...

Why would you buy a car you can't afford? CASH is cheaper in the LR.

I loaned the cash for the car, if i were to save up to cash like that it would take me the same time as the loan is being payed off, 5 years.

EDIT: I dont think its the same thing to get a bankloan in the states as it is here.. I mean everyone here with a car over 10k gets a loan i believe.

It's your money man, give it to the bank, sleep worse at night, or get a Volvo 740 and impress with a BMW in 5 years (which due to depreciation is an equal number of years newer).

Sounds like you have an income issue...5 years to save up the value of an average E46 of $10k? That is $2k a year. Pick up a second job and you could pick up an extra $1k a month. Sacrifice to win and you will.
