Anyone here considering a V8 transplant?

If you had the money which engine would you choose?

I would get

a 4.4 V8 with a dinan supercharger and put it in my sedan or get the 4.6 V8 and see if anyone would make an SC for that.

it was an idea I considered... I decided not to do it with this car... but my next one will definitely be a V8

basically, it's a coin-toss though...

"M-Powered" with the S62 M5 engine...

or "Blown V8" with the M62 4.4L 540i/6 and throw on a supercharger.

either way, you'll see very similar performance numbers.. it's your call!

I'm thinking a Chevy 454

In all seriousness, I would love to have a Hartge H50. I don't think it's worth $120k, but M5 engine in 3-series body is a wet dream for me

Defintely the M62TU 4.4L from the MY2000+ 540. For the price of an S62 5.0L (about $15K-$18K), you could basically rebuild the entire 4.4L into an 8500 RPM monster (titanium rods, billet crank, billet hi-comp pistons, cams, solid lifter heads, etc). Plus the shortened stroke of the 4.4L (3.26 vs. 3.50) will ensure less stress on the bottomend.

How about the upcoming twin-turbo 3.0L inline-6?

3.0 Twin turbo engine

I don't think BMW will ever produce the rumored twin turbo 3.0i. Autoweek has been known to fabricate stories to sell magazines. I think a high revving 4.4 liter would be perfect. How much HP and torque would a tricked out 4.4i make? I've heard that the 4.4 liter is fairly light too.

With a solid lifter conversion, cams and proper head porting, along with a nice intake/exhaust system, the 4.4L should be able to make about 100HP/liter @ 8500 (if not more), so figure about 440HP...torque would be around 380-400 ft-lbs.

How would you get the M62TU to communicate with an M54B30 ECU though? I am assuming this can be done- or you could swap in the engine management from the 2000+ 540i. Perhaps it is less complicated than it seems. A stand alone engine management system is nice.. but for a street car?

When you purchase the engine, you will need to get the ECU/Harness and tranny. The ECU/Tranny from the 3.0L will not work...the driveshaft will have to be modified as well.

UltimateOne- What are you thinking of doing with your car next year? I'd be interested in hearing what Turner had to say as well.

When doing an engine swap like this will there be a tamper light on indefinitely? I assume the 540i harness/ECU can communicate with the stock speedo/tach unit. Of course that might need replacement to show an 8500RPM Redline!

V8 & changes

Have any of you guys considered this?

In the 5 series equipped with the V8, the factory changes the steering system to a recirculating ball vs. the rack & pinon due to lack of room. It would make sense to me that this would apply to the 3 as well.

Anybody know about this? Sure would hate to forego the r&p for the ball.

I'm pretty sure that, even in the Hartge M5 powered 3er, they maintained the rack and pinon setup.
