my dye job

ok..so I got a few requests to post my red dye job. Please keep in mind this is the old one, i have since decided to redo it. I stopped half way because of the move and I didn't like the result. I had to wait until now to find time to redo and finish what i started 8 months ago. Right now all 4 panels are in the dining room waiting for a second coats. I probably won't get around to finish it until Christmas. I will post better pictures of what the final result will be...but here is what "cardinal red" is for those that are curious. I hope the pics will show up

Why are they gloss? What kinda dye did you use?
What do you NOT like about what you;ve done?

I used the dye from the same company you used

The headrests are all set...I am not redoing them.

For the door panels, I had a lot of imperfections on the edges, I even got a little red dye on the black vinyl part that won't come off at all (thus, I am dying the panel black again in some area to get rid of the little red dots I can't scrup off).

Lastly, my dog was running around and got his hairs on the panels before it dried. Of course, I didn't see them until the dye dried so I literally had to use a knife to scrape them off the panels and made a mess of the dye job.

I am not sure about the glossy question...I took those pictures right after i applied some leather protectant to shine them...they are not so glossy now.

I didn't get any protectant, I got satin clear coat and conditioner though.

Do you have clear coat on yours?

no clear coat last time, but i bought clear coat for this time. I will apply clear coat to those headrests...good luck with your dye job...I hope to get it done before the end of the year so I can post a complete set of new interior.

Would you be interested in changing armrests with me before you dye it? I need a black one for my 2tone job, I have gray now.

what is the color of the non leather part of the armrest? mine is black and i think yours is grey right? If so, i don't think I want to trade since I dye the leather to red but then the grey plastic will not match to anything else.

This is very interesting. How difficult is it to do by yourself? How much would a uhpolstery (spelling?) place charge?

My 2-tone front and rear seats cost me $2500 to re-upholster...

It depends on what kind of fabric you choose so price can vary, I went with black CF patterned/gray leather.

that is about right..I was quoted around $2500 to $2800 to do by a professional but they wouldn't do the door panels so I decided to do everything myself. I researched plenty to have somebody else to do it because I am just so busy, thus 8 months later and I am not done...but finding the people that can and willing to do it was very difficult for me.

I have seen many beautiful two tone sets (seats and door panels) from BMW individuals for sale in Europe/ebay but I can't get anyone to ship it to the US. Hell, one seller was selling an entire 2 toned interior individual set for 500 Euro and I can't get them to pack them up for the US. I would have gladly pay another $500 bucks for that set to ship

Do you think that the spray-on VHT dye will work as well as what you used? I don't want to go through the hassle of brushing the stuff on. I want to simply spray it on like I've seen people do. I have black interior and you've given me hope that black CAN go to a lighter color. I previously had thought it was only possible to go from lighter colors to darker colors... I'm thinking of doing just a grey 2 tone

I don't brush either, I use the spray thing they sell to spray the dye on .... work great!

I brushed the 1st time and it took way too long and I can't get it to be even...one of many reasons I am redoing it now.

use this http://www.leatherworldtech.com/Prod...roductid=lw555

to spray the dye. I used 3 to do all the door panels 3 to 4 coats so order at least 3 or more..they are cheap and well worth the $$
