The 545i/645ci both had SMG as an option- unfortunately, it's nowhere near as quick and dynamic as that found in the M3.

Whats the best place to find wrecked bimmers? I have been needing some steering components for a while?

If I used the M3 engine + SMG tranny in an X5...would that work power wise? Would it be slower than say a 300 hp 4.4? I don't know much about low end torque...it would just seem like displacement matters a lot more when its a truck?

I'd love to see you build on a 4.8iS though.

I seriously think you should build your own v12 X5 smg. Im sure you can get some people to sponsor you considering what youve done with the 323. Plus something like would prolly get some magazine attention.

I don't even know where to begin to find a v12 engine that fits the SMG tranny...anyone know if the v8 engine fits the smg tranny?

the SMG tranny is based off of the standard 6 speed manual right?
Of course it will work on the v8 especially the X5 since BMW used to offer a 4.4i 5spd (or 6spd). And since the M trannies are designed to withstand only more abuse i dont see how it would be damaging to retro fit an SMGII from an e46 M3 into an X5, or to fit the SMG tranny from a 545i/550i in there. Unless of course youre planning on supercharging the v8, then the extra torque could cause you some problems but then again there are like 600hp-700hp M3s using the SMG tranny. Whether or not SMG works with AWD would be a better question

//M: Excellent points. I realized that the SMG from 545/550 isn't the same as the SMGII from the M3...if its slower than the SMGII then there really isn't a point...but the AWD I think would be a problem...
I think the stick X5 only came on the 3.0 which is good news because I think that was the same engine in the 330's... I guess the real question is...is the m3 engine the only engine that the SMGII has been made for? If I could get my hands on an M5 engine + SMG...that would be nuts... Digging up some previous SMGII info... http://e46.mit.edu/images/2005-06-27..._Reference.pdf It seems the SMG needs to talk to 2 sensors under the seats, DSC, and DME...sensors are cake...DSC I figure it would be the same...its not like the car as 6 wheels...I really wonder how the SMGII works with lauch control...does it tell the motor to rev? hmmm.... |

the 4.4 was offered with 5spd option, i remember because i was there when my dad was ordering one in 2001. It was only an option for the first two production years 2000 and 2001 i think. I could be wrong and the saleswoman could have been lying.

Hey you might be able to order a special SMG tranny from BMW's Motorsport division. One of the members on here has done this with his 330. He says the SMG he got is as fast as the one you get in an M3, and it also mates to a regular 3er engine. So a custom setup might be the solution for you.

:Warning: this post may become 127 pages long.
Best Ideas seen so far: 1) SMG II Tranny onto to the X5 2) M3 Engine into the X5 (probably not) 3) Find a wrecked new M5 (somebody's gonna screw up before New Year's - a little too much wine under the mistletoe this season?) I think the M5 idea would be the best. Keep brainstorming MITE, you need stuff like this to keep you busy. If you really need something to do I can send you my X5 and M3, maybe swap the engines with other? 4.4L V8 M3 , My X5 may get slower....lol, but the M3.......wow.j/p, this should be interesting.

I frequently roam X5world.com, especially in europe the 3.0 5spd were pretty common. I don't think you would find any X5 3.0 5spd cars on the lot unless they were specially ordered that way in the US.

Would an E46 M3 engine + SMGII actually be that bad in an X5?
Availability: easier to get...a lot more affordable...<8k for engine + tranny these days...<15k for and X5...we're talking <25k for something pretty special... Weight: Well, the X5 3.0 is roughly the same shape...and probably have the same motor mounts... Torque: I guess it would be lower...but then its nice to have a higher reving X5? Electronics: This would be much easier since the engine and the tranny are made for each other...im sure the 2nd time through will be easier too... Someone needs to drop off a brand new E60 M5 engine and SMGIII on my doorstep...I guess that can be on the xmas this this year =p
