DIY Request: Wiring Required For Autofold Mirrors On Pre 01' E46
My m3 autofold mirrors came in yesterday and i was very eager to have them painted and installed. I was told i simply had to purchase the new switch needed for autofold feature (about 40 bucks) but recently learned i have to do some wiring. Any ideas where to find a diy on the wiring job or any ideas if anyone on this site has gone through with it in the past? I know david jay was in the same boat as I but i figured I would help him out as well by finding it in the event someone knew where I could get it.

Are you being serious? Who said all you need so the switch? There are threads about this and it isn't that simple. At the very least, make sure you have fuse 57 (the power source!)

from what i heard if you have fuse 57 on your fuse box then you dont need to do any wiring.....if you have fuse 57 then your car is already prewired for the autofolding mirrors.
Just plug in the new switch and it should work

i think i do have fuse 57... does that mean that it will work on my 2000 328Ci with no additional wiring?

Here's what I would do.
If you have fuse 57, great, then you most likely have a module in your door that receives the fold instruction from the switch. Follow the instructions for taking off the door panel, and see where your mirror wiring goes. If it goes to a module screwed to the door, where does this module go next? On my module, there are 2 connections, one goes to the mirror (this either has 6 or 12 pins, which tells you which wiring choice you need for your mirrors), the other connection splits off, one end goes to the other side of the car along with your speaker wiring, and the other end goes to the mirror switch that you need to replace. The wire that goes to the mirror switch, note how many total pins are possible with the current cable. If there are 6, then you need the 6 pin folding mirror switch (this is what I needed). If there are 12, get the switch with two 6 pin connections. Just taking off the mirror switch doesn't tell the whole picture. I needed 12 pin mirrors, and a 6 pin switch. You need to take off the door panel and see what you have in there. Erik |

Buy the modules, buy the wires to connect them, and install all of it.

I have fuse 57 and have had the new switch shipped to my house.. do I need to wire anything else to get them to work or should it simply just do so?

With older cars that do not have autofold feature, you'll have to wire them yourself with a DPDT switch. For the older cars, a OEM mirror switch will *not* work.
