steering wheel controlling aftermarket HU?

Hi,
i'm new to the world of having volume and up/down buttons on steering wheel, so i hope this question doesn't sound stupid (my old w202 c-class doesn't have this feature). I'm thinking about getting either a factory CD changer for my 2000 323i wagon or getting a brand new single-disk aftermarket cd player. If I decide to go for an aftermarket headunit, will I still be able to control the volume and other stuff using my steering wheel? what I have in mind is a Clarion HX-D10 headunit that I pulled out from my C-Class 2 months ago. There was just a thread about this a week or so ago.

There is a unit you can buy that will convert your steering wheel controls into something your head unit can recognize. It only works with certain brands of heads, though.

I believe it's the PAC SWI-X..something like that. I just bought it for 59.99 online. Look for it.

Are you using a new headunit or new In-Dash LCD? I hope the PAC SWI-X works w/ my new Clarion LCD.

I heard it works w/any aftermarket deck as long as it has a remote w/it. It uses the IR and beams it to make it work w/the steering wheel controls.

All the steering wheel kits are just remotes.. You MUST have a HU that has remote control capability.. The only company that makes a true adapter that will interface with the E46 is alpine and you must use their decks.. Oh.. you can only purchase the part in Germany.. cant get in US...
