Two things to note:This not a Valvetronic motor. Second, it is two parallel small turbos, 1 for each 3 cylinders that feed into a single intake. Not sequential. And the fact that we have Valvetronic tuning software for the new E90 already (MSV70), tuning this engine is a matter of just getting one on the dyno and working on it.

We predict simple software looks to be 350+hp.

Simple minor upgrades like our headers, piping, etc a bit more.

Turbo swap, easy 400+hp.

We will keep working on it and let everyone know how it turns out!
hmmmm...that's funny because every article i read is saying this engine does have valvetronic

The ones we saw were not Valvetronic.

And more sad news, we think it is not going to the US.

If that's true then BMW is stupid, they need an engine to compete with the IS350...please let this be false

This 7er is circa 1985 btw...
afaik more recently there has also been a 740i turbo and lets not forget all the diesel powered cars bmw makes.

Some of you are soooo funny!! Goodness, as we all strive to add more power and look to forced induction to do so. Yet some are NOW all of the sudden very timid, even crying bloody murder over BMW's stock turbo setup. Hehe, some want their cake and eat it too.

Hmmm, a 340i with a detuned 4.0L V8 would be much better for the US! Maybe 325hp Can't move the HP over the E46 M3's 333hp, for marketing purposes, hehe!

BMW pulled 333hp out of a 3.2 (S54). They lowered the compression on this one to make it a safe compression for the turbos.

Again, it's a 3.0, but that's beside the point anyway.

that makes no sense, why would they go back to using 328 designation? it should be 330 and 335.

Because the 328 will supposedly sell for 325-like prices, and BMW doesn't want to infringe upon the egos of 330i owners, or the residual values of their cars. Marketing reasons only.

That's pretty slick marketing. I guess they couldn't have gone with 326, 327, or 329?

The 328 badge has a lot of historical cachet. For one, it's been used on the 3 series before (model years 1996-2000; E36 and E46). Secondly, one of the most famous pre-war BMW sports cars was - you guessed it - the BMW 328 (even though it has nothing in common with the 3 series).

I agree with this ^^^ post.

But I don't see this ^^^ as a very likely reason. I don't see where the number 8 plays a big role image-wise. Like said, it's all about marketing. It's similar to the 323 and the 328 and their different engine displacements.

I found something else. I hope it's not a repost:
Quote:
I got verbal confirmation from a friend at BMW corporate today.

Yes, there will be a 328 and a 335, and no more 325 and 330. This is absolute, in his words.

The new 328 engine will have an new induction system and other "tweeks". He did say the engine will be in the 250hp range. The 335 will indeed be the bi-turbo and will also have "other" new technology. He said the 335 power will be "similar" to that of the current M3, but not quite as high, and not yet determined. I also found it interesting that the bi-turbo engine is being designed to incorporate another hp increase about 2 years later. The 335 will be available with SMG. There will be new wheels with the 335 sport package, bigger brakes for both cars. There may also be dual tail pipes on the 335with a single pipe on each side. One or both of the new engines will wind up in all BMWs. M3 will be slightly over 400hp with 7 speed SMG and he says it is not too far off, but I think we all know that.

He also talked about a new twin turbo V8 under development for introduction at some point in the life cycle of the next generation 7 series. Seems BMW is going the turbo route.

He would not, however, tell me when and where we will see these new engines. He kind of hinted at 2007 by saying "near future". He did indicate we would not see these motors while the E46 M3 is still in production for sure.

I am going to see him in the next week or so. I will push for more details.

I was only giving reasons for using "328" instead of "327" or "329" something else.
