M5 SMG Steering Wheel on E46...

So I took the plunge...Ordered directly from Germany...$550 for the wheel...$550 for the airbag...Figure that's not that bad...considering a m3 wheel is around $400 right? Nope that isn't the case...BMW no longer sells their steering wheels in one piece...

Yep this came to a shock to me as well...everything is sold seperately down to the screws...all of a sudden...im stuck with $1100 of junk unless I get the rest of the parts...

ground plate...

Wiring...

Trim...

Buttons...

Paddles...Much Much Much better than the m3 ones...

Anyway...$1700 later(Dealer cost)...I have all the parts...but there's quite a few modifications you need to make to get this to work...

First you have to grind away the two metal posts...Working here with my neighbor...he has all the tools in the world...

Drilled out a hole so it'll be easier to dremel later...

I never wear safety goggles...i realized how much safer they make you feel...

Here's what it should look like after both posts are cut down...

Now you have to punch two holes for the steering column...

After that cut out some space for the wiring...

Clean it all up...

Now the M3 steering column fits on a M5 wheel...

Now that we got that out of the way...we can assemble the wheel...Paddles...

Secure the wiring harness...

Ground plate...

Attach the buttons to the trim...

Put the two together...

Attach the wires...

This is what you should have...

Then the airbag...

We're not done just yet...the electric stuff is all different...the paddles and the buttons are combined into one plug on the M5 wheel...

Furthermore...the M5 has a seperate control module that interfaces the buttons to the car...Notice how simple the buttons are...

The M3 has the control module built into the back of of the buttons...

So why did they do this? Personally i think they did this so they can sell the left and right buttons seperately...and the right side buttons for the m5 and 545 are different so they can just change that part...Anyway...Here's the 6 pin lead from the M5 wheel...

Blue/white and Blue/black are the paddle leads...they are just grounded just like the M3...but there's also a red power that goes into the paddles...i don't know why though...

Love it when it fits perfectly...

I'll deal with the buttons next time...for now the airbag and the paddes work no problem...I don't think there'll be a problem just ran out of time today...

Mount...There's a gap but it's not big deal it's very sturdy as it is...

The m5 bolt is longer but also thinner...won't work for the e46...but the old one works just fine...

Final product...

Paddles work...

Also a video...

That's it for now...

You are a brave man! I found I liked the M3 paddles better than the M5 paddles though

If you look at the thread mentioned you will realize all that he has done is probably the smartest (objectively speaking) member on this board. I believe that he is an electrical engineer. I do not know you mechanical or electrical capabilities but i am pretty sure that his are greater. He is a very smart kid.
