Trying to decide on good 10" subwoofer. I'm having a custom enclusure built that takes up the right side of the trunk. Similar to t00h0t - 02 LSB SMG's install. Link here: http://members.roadfly.com/loki/e46m3_faq.html.
So far my choices are either the Alpine R-series or JL W3. Any recomendations??? I'm upgrading to a mono amp, but are leaving the stock HK speakers. TIA |

alpine type r is a much better sub. Make sure you get the dual voice coil. I have had experience with both jl and alpine subs, alpine is better.

Thanks djbmw, I'm so confused right now, since I've heard form others how hard it is to make a system sound good in our cars. Partly due to tapping in to the stock HK speakers and head unit, and also due to the tightness of our cars (not allowing enough bass through to produce an accurate sound). Yet I'm still willing to give it a shot.
Right now I'm leaning more towards the Alpine. My previous system had 2-12" JL W6's, and they pounded, and for as long as I can remember I've used Alpine for head units and amps. Can you explain what the "dual voice coil" does? I was reccomended to use the W3 with this specific box (should be done by next week or so), but recently I rode in my cousins Exterra with a single 12" Alpine and it sounded perfect! Also would you care to elaborate why you like Alpines' subs better? |

as far as 10s are concerned, Kicker Solobaric L7s are the way to go... The sound quality and bass is unbelievable for 10s...

It depends on what type of music/or bass you like. That question alone can determine what is the best subs for your taste.

alpine is not as good of a subwoofer as JL AUdio in my opinion, although the Type R dual voice coil is a very good sub. I'd go for a 10W6 or a 10W7 if you can swing it....
If not, there are also other great options for the moneyl. MTX 8000s are great. Image Dynamics makes the best subs in the world pretty much.. if you want REAL bass.. go w/ the Adire Brahma.. but doesn't come in 10".

I can't stop telling people how good the kicker solobarics are... they are excellent and have small enclosure requirements! Xtant also makes a nice hexagonal sub... PPI flat driver... those are my favourites...

Hey playinj30,
I essentially wanted to go with a JL W7, but I'm working with a small box dimension (inside =approx .98), and was advised that the W3 is the reccomended sub. Anyways after doing some research I think that a 10" W6v2, might work with the given space. Here's a link to the sub (first link didn't work) http://members.roadfly.com/loki/e46m3_faq.html Anyone care to comment on using a JL W6 v2 in this box? I've looked into some others subs in specific the ones the rest of you people mentioned such as Adires, Image Dynamics, MTX, but if the W6's will work well in this box, I think I'll get that! |

dollar 99: It certainly would be unless you are really looking to damage your ears. The solobaric hits low, hard and has high SQ quality. (F*uck I'm sounding like a kicker rep!)
The thing about it is that the more power, the better... and with less than a 300W power amp you won't be doing it justice. It is an expensive amp to run in terms of amplification power. but it saves heaps of space and looks cool. I was running it of a kicker ZR360 but now have taken the system out of my boot in anticipation of doing a complete audio makeover.... The only thing I would prefer to solobaric setup would be an Xtant setup or a W7, but realistically the W7 is out of the picture because the enclosure would eat all my boot space. The best way to tell whether it would be loud enough for u is just to go down and audition it. Make sure the shop has a good amp hooked up to it. HaN-hAn |

i've had them both in my display at the same time. same power, same track & same volume, the W3V2 will smoke the Alpine type R. This is a side by side comparo. No question. Each sub in it's ideal size sealed enclosure as well. GO JL!!!!!!!!!!
