Shyt, I tore a Tendon...

I went on vacation about three weeks ago and after about two days drinking it up in Vegas I started having some excrutiating pains in my left elbow. When I put pressure on it it feels like someone is putting a cigarette out on the inside of my elbow. Has anyone had this? I went to the doctor and he tells me I have Tendonitis or torn Tendons. He wants me to go to a specialist to get Cortazone shots or something like this. I heard bad things about that stuff...only a band-ade not a cure. Anyway I have gone fron 184lbs to 178 in three weeks 'cause I can hardly train upper body. This totally sucks

tendonitis is not a torn tendon... but it is an irritated/ inflamed tendon... maybe from overworking that muscle.

The cortizone shot is a steroid shot that will get the inflammation to go down so the tendon is not as irritated. After that just stretch & light range of motion type exercises should help you rehab your tendon... but don't over exert it or it will continue and get worse... give it some time to heal.

You can't really "Cure" tendonitis. It happens from being overworked. Ice, advil and resting the body part is the usual remedy.

NSAID's (Non steroidal anti-inflamatory drugs=Advil, Aleve, etc.) can inhibit the repair of damaged tissue. To put it simply, the body reacts to tissue damage with inflamation...inflamation being a surplus of bloodflow to the area needing repair. When you reduce the inflamation with drugs such as NSAID's you also inhibit the speedy healing of the damaged tissue. I have been through this before with supraspinatus tendinitis.

A steroid/cortizone shot will reduce inflamation but it can also weaken the tissue it is injected into. If you get the shots, make sure you follow the doctors orders about limiting strenuous activity with that muscle group.

I found that any activity that did not cause pain was beneficial to my recovery. Whether it was thera band exercises or slow swimming, the more I used it the better it felt. Best of luck.
