Progressive Scan vs HD Upconvert

What's the difference? If I have an HDTV and a good progressive scan DVD player, should I upgrade to a HD-upconverting player?

best way to find out is to buy one and see for yourself.

My denon upconvert looks no different the the pio progressive scan that I have.

My sony LCD upconverts all signals to its native resolution anyway so that prolly is why the 2 DVD players looks similar

Well, it depends on which unit u buy. Your hdtv is only showing your progressive scan dvds in 480p at the most. Now if u get an upscaling dvd player, it's not true hd coming out of it but more like a fine tuning of the 480- signal. Look at it like an an unsharp masking of the progressive signal. I have the Panny s97s, have it set at 720p, but it's a hell of a difference between my old progressive scan dvd player.

I have an older Toshiba DVD player that does a fantastic job at deinterlacing and 3:2 pulldown. Looks fabulous. I also have a media PC that can output any signal I want, so I can compare what different source resolutions look best on my TV. They all look essentially identical, here's why -

Bear in mind that any fixed-pixel display (LCD, plasma, DLP) will scale to native resolution anyway regardless of the input resolution. This is especially relevant with plasma, since most 50" + are 768p, so EVERY input resolution is scaled.
