Stripped M3's for the track.

I went to MSR Houston (www.msrhouston.com) for a motorcycle track day and they had a garage there full of M3's. It turns out they can't get enough M3 to meet customer demand for club or SCCA racing. People absolutely love the cars so they're snatching up every new and used M3 w/o sunroof and preferably without premium package, xenon's, and the rest of the weight adding equipment. We had the privledge of watching the track manager and then one of the M3 techs turn hot laps in a tuned M3 (the silver one below running slicks). It was an amazing site, they were turning 1:44's in this M3, to give you an idea most fast motorcycles were turning 1:50's. He said he turned a 1:32 in a Panoz. So right there at the track they strip these M3 down to nothing, even removing the windshield to install a custom roll cage. The one pictured below is a 2006 M3 with just 100 miles on it being stripped. They had some modified STI's there at the track w/ slicks so I asked which got around faster and he told me there's no doubt, the M3 owns the STI at the track.

2006 Alpine White M3

Here's an identical seat that will be installed in the white M3.

You can barely make out the roll cage behind the seat.

Here's the M3 I saw turning 1:44's...Check out the slicks.

This M3 is completely modified... it runs a cat-less system with 3 inch down pipe and basically 3 inches all the way to a single exhaust. It's insanely loud!

...and it's also well used..

Jeez, an '06 M3 stripped down like that makes me cringe.

You don't necessarily have to start with a non sunroof model. In fact, I'm glad ours had a sunroof that we replaced with a hard top.

it deff helps if the roof has to be replaced, easier for the fabricators to get 360 deg weld around the tubing

And easier for the painter. We had the interior painted with the roof off; had the underside of the roof painted and then glued on (will make it easier to remove if it ever has to come off again).

There may be other reasons as well
