So in other words. The engine they used in the Mclaren F1 was the M8 engine?

It is fairly obvious that BMW will not be bringing back the 8series anytime soon. The current 6 series is in exactly the same category as the 8 and is definitely its replacement.

Yes, the new 6 is in essence the replacement for the 8-series rather than a continuation of the previous 6.

I don't care what anyone says, the 8 is the most beautiful BMW ever produced. I'm sad that mine was so expensive to maintain (yes, they are notoriously expensive and difficult to work on). Otherwise I would still have mine. I love the styling.

But hey I can't complain about what I'm driving now. In the driving dept, E46 M3 > E31 in pretty much every aspect.

I would love to own another one eventually though. 850CSi ftw...although, there are a limited number of Dinan TT 850's around that push 570+ HP. Back when Dinan had balls.

My mechanic has a 1994 850ci in black. He's in the process of completely restoring the car. It was in horrible shape before. He just had this CRAAAZY paint job done on it (don't worry, it's still black), but the black paint looks even better than it did from the factory. The car is sitting at his garage right now completely stripped. When he has time, he's going to reassemble the whole thing, get some nice wheels for it, and drive it around.

The bauty of the 8 ser is the short production run... I think it was mde for 2 years? How can it go out of style with no new model to replace it. I also agree that the new 6 is more like the 8.

i can see the 8 coming back, they need something to put the SL65 in its place. Id say 15 years after the last 8er was made they will bring it back, just like the 6, so in 2012 we will see the next 8 series i hope

Great, classy car that will never be out of style like the "old" 6 still looking good. If they had remained in production the 8 would now be Bangled so better to have fond memories of the 8 with forever styling.

Thanks for sharing Alex!

That 8 series always made me stare.I to this day have always been a fan of that bodystyle.I remember making a trip over to Dinan back in the day when they were in Mountain view and they were twin turbo charging these bad boys,my jaw dropped, even though I was only 16,I just could only imagine owning one.Great post,it definitely brought back a few memories for me thats for sure.

I've heard that the 8-series didn't sell many units. If that is indeed true, that may be the reason why BMW chose not to revive it.

It was never a high volumn car, also think about this a 1997 850s MSRP was $94,700 a 1992 ran $78,500

Thats what and M6 costs 10 years later.

the 850CSi is a lot more powerful than the regular 850. 850CSi has 380 hp and 550 Nm, and is definately an M car - it has "Powered by ///M" written on the engine only 1510 were made.

there is actually one of these for sale in Norway as we speak, with Alpina wheels. this particular car cost $363 000 USD in Norway brand new back in 1993. this also says something about the crazy norwegian car prices..

there's also a BMW Alpina B12 5.0 Coupe (850 modified by Alpina) for sale here. only 97 were produced, this car has 350 hp.

Glad you guys are enjoying this post.

I am an 8er afficionado...

Used to be a member at ClubE31.com when I owned my 840Ci...1997 in dark red...awesome car, I *tried* to mod it, but didnt get far...If you could even find a part...it costed an arm and a leg. Had an Alpina B12 5.0 front valance and an M-Technik (850CSi) rear diffusor. That set me back enough...i also didnt want to deal with the hassle of maintaining that car. Too much $$$$.

Jumped from that into my ///M and onto E46F. It was a sweet car none-the-less.

There's a poor 850i near my office, in a townhome parking lot. It's been sitting there without movement since I moved here last July!!! It looks so sad, just crying out in the darkness...."somebody love me, and drive me..."

I should find the owner and give him a beating on principle! (sniffle)

Although there were no "M8" badged 8ers, BMW did send the 8er for a massage by M. The result was the 850CSi. Although they have no M badge, they are true M cars, with a 5.6l S70 engine and WBS vin number. They are so rare, that even a used high milage car will sell for over 55K.

Cheers,

I think the part with the boxes/destruction is some serious bs but the 850CSi is amazing. There was one on eBay recently in the 60k range

I remember the 8 from when I was a little kid and still pushed around hotwheels. My favourite one was the 8series, and didn't know it until a little later. That long long ago...

Wouldent it be fun to perform a covert operation to break in and steal it? It would be for a good cause (in our eyes). That car does not deserve destruction... I would totally do it...007 style.
