Alpina Z8 sighting

I visited Detroit, Michigan at the end of May and while strolling around in the very Capital of American Automobiles, it was my very pleasant surprise to run into an Alpina-tuned Z8.

How many are there in the US? In general, I could cound how many Z8s I see a year, leave alone an Alpina (unless they now all come Alpina)...

that's awesome...i think i'd rather have a stock bmw one though. those cars are absolutely perfect...classiest sports car ever. whenever i see one modded i feel like it has been cheapened.

BMW sanctioned and sold them through the dealerships. Does this mean they are somehow less special? I am not sure what the point is.

TRUE

Plus you dont get the S62 M5 engine in the Alpina. You get a 4.8L V8, very similar to a X5 4.6is engine.

I believe there are something like 5k Z8's in the U.S.

BTW I saw a silver one today as well.

well it looks modded, that's all that really matters. and of all the things to change about the z8 why would they ever change the steering wheel? it is one of my favorite parts of the car.

this is one case where if somebody offered me an alpina z8 or a regular bmw z8 i'd take the bmw. i don't care how rare the alpina may be, or how much more it may be worth, or how much faster it might be, i still like the regular one better.

edit: taking another look the wheel isn't that much different...i still like it better with the all silver spokes.

Actually the Z8 Alpina is a BMW. It was offered the last year of the Z8's cycle. Its not special order, it was a model grade.

ahahah

Alpina has always been the closest Modification company to the BMW group, mostly in Europe. In this country we seem to be partial to Dinan. I doubt Dinan would ever be able to produce a production line for BMW, and in that case I dont know if Hamann could either.

The cool thing about the car is though, its the first an only car done like that by BMW, and it may be the last.

they changed the steering wheel because they needed the buttons for shifting, the "switchtronic" transmission has been an alpina trademark for a long time.

I love the Alpina version. I am not a huge fan of it regular one though. Did anyone else see in Eurotuner last month that Alpina is releasing the 7series with Alpina mods in the states this year? The 7er looks hot!
