weight loss?

I've been working out pretty consistently, going to the gym every other day and running for about 40 minutes 4-5 days a week for about 3 to 4 months. I didn't notice any changes in my weight. (note i'm trying to lose fat) and i didn't notice a change really. maybe about 3 pounds in the last 4 months. Last week, school got a little hectic and didn't go to the gym for about 5 days and didn't do cardio for 7 days. Eating pretty regularly during that week, and not the good stuff neither pretty fattening foods. I weighed myself again and I lost 5 pounds. Is this normal? Where does this weight loss come off of? Thanks in advanced.

I've always thought that "instant" weight loss, or weight that comes off quickly was due to fluid loss.
