Where did you find the manual unit you're using? The only one I found that looked like it would work was from ebay UK, and they wanted 50 quid to ship it overseas. Do you have a part number from it so if I go down this path I can make sure I'm buying the correct one?

I wonder if the dealership is even able to do a recode on these cars anymore. Last time I talked to my service advisor about adding an OBC function to my 325XiT he said the software version they are using now doesn't support the older vehicles for something like a recode.

Let us know what you find out.

Thanks!

Michael

I purchased the unit from the UK. Price and shipping were under $65 - so I am not into this project for a lot of money so far. From the parts listing on realoem, the correct PN is 64.11.6.931.839 for a 2000 323i - which is what I purchased.

realoem shows the same part number for the air boxes - so I am reasonably sure the air boxes are the same. Now I am a bit stuck. I may contact a fellow member TerraPhantm. He seems to be the most knowledgeable with these coding and recoding issues - he helped me quite a bit with my LCM (Lighting Control Module) questions.

Hopefully others will chime in with helpful comments.

I'll keep you posted.

Lets bring back the dead!

Anyone ever get anywhere on getting the directional controls to work? I wonder if it's something that can be coded in PA Soft...

You sure about that? Atleast with the IHKA, the coding doesn't seem to vary much from model to model (just changing default settings from one year t othe next). I would imagine the IHKR to be similar.

What I don't know is if the extra servos will somehow impede IHKR functionality.

Honestly, I would just plug it in and see if it works.

TerraPhantm - I did try an installation - see my earlier post which I have also copied below:
I have a manual control module that I acquired to use as a test. All wiring harnesses / plugs from my car are the same as the manual controller so the manual unit plugs right in. These are my observation of how the system operated after I installed it.

1. The fan switch operated the fan correctly.
2. The recirculate switch seemed to work - what I mean is I heard flaps moving when I depressed the switch.
3. The directional controls did not work.
4. The rear defroster switch worked correctly.
I talked with some guys a while back on a UK site that had performed the manual to auto retrofit. Apparently BMW used to make a kit, which include the additional servos and the correct wiring harness. I asked one of them them about coding - and there were no coding requirements after installation. I also asked about buying their discarded manual parts - but they did not keep them. I spent a bit of time trying to find these parts from UK "breakers" (salvage yards) but the best I could do was find someone to send me the entire HVAC box - and shipping was too expensive.

Update - I found an IHKR heater box complete with stepper motors, flap mechanism and wiring harness from a UK breaker. Item is on the way. I did not really need the entire box, just the flap mechanism, but decided to purchase the entire assembly for reference so I can know how mine should look after installation. From what I have read, this is not supposed to be a dash out conversion. I'll let you know how it goes - although there are not to many folks that really are interested in an auto to manual climate control conversion...

Yes, please let me know the outcome. I'll probably be interested in doing the same as you.

Thank you!

Subscribed. I, too, prefer manual controls....at least knobs to adjust temperature, fan speed, etc.

Also interested in the auto to manual conversion. Did you ever get the parts to work correctly after the initial try?
