ODB-II code database ONLINE...
My "Check Engine Soon" light came on Tuesday and I thought I was going to have to trek the 40 miles to my dealer...
Then I thought, screw them, and went and bought an ODB-II scanner yesterday. By then, the Check lamp had turned itself off. Go figure. However, I know the trouble codes were still in the car's memory, so I scanned it anyway. Turns out it was a misfire from a low fuel level and was fine after I got gas. To make it easier for people to look up codes in the future, I wrote a simple searchable database for ODB-II and BMW specific DTC codes pertaining to our E46s. The Bentley Manual and the scanner itself did not contain all of the code descriptions, so I pooled multiple sources together and came up with the database. Where did you get the OBD II scanner? I've been looking for one ever since my friend got one for his VW.

I used an AutoX-Ray scanner from a company here in Tempe. They are carried by CheckerAuto/PartsAmerican/Kragen/Schucks nationwide I imagine...
A bit pricey, but it will scan GM, Ford, Chrysler, VW, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and more... pretty much any 1996 and newer vehicle...I just used it to clear my friend's Tacoma's check engine light. It also does live data stream monitoring, freeze frame, captures, etc...

There was a group buy here last year for some OBD-II software from www.obd-2.com. I got it and I love it! I got the universal cable so I can download from all makes and models. Interfaces through a laptop and has real-time and recording capabilities.

Yes, the AutoXRay will clear codes and also upload freeze frame and capture data to a laptop/PC using graphs and charts...
