My windshield washer fluid tank is leaking out all of it's water. I took the reservior tank out to investigate. The Strainer F Wash Pump (#7) is still glued tight to the bottom of the tank. I also took the washer pump out.
The washer pump(#6) is still operational as it sprayed fluid on the windshield, it was replaced 1 year ago. I've took the washer pump apart and put it back in one piece, and it stills works. I swore I tight it back into the Wash Pump base tightly. But overnight, all the water leaked again. So what do I do next, I don't know where the leak is exactly or what parts to replace; #6 or #7 or both or the tank? Any help! http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...83&hg=61&fg=45 |

funny... mine stated doing that today. Took it apart and found that it was the pump, theres a little hole which i think is for air to go into the pump so it functions, it was leeking out of this hole, I know this because I pluged it to see if I could rig it, doing that didn't allow the fluid to flow through the system, damn.... So I'll have to buy a new pump. Bimmerzone has them for around $22.

Its the washer pump. Happens all the time. Just fork it over to the stealership and get a new one. Make sure you get the new gasket/screen with it.

Can you explain the mechanics as to why the washer pump is the cause of the leak even though it's still operable and things look sealed and tight.

Well the hole that fluid comes out as far as I can tell is for air to circulate into the pumping valve. If its working properly air would be sucked in, but then immediately seal itself to prevent a fluid leak in the reverse, after time this valve just gets wore out and begins to fail.

If it all leaked out overnight then you need to push the washer/screen in tighter

hey i noticed coming home last night that my washer fluid is low as well.
Funny because i just got it back from the dealership where they did rear subframe inspection as well as brakes and oil and the sheet i got back says they also topped off the washer fluid. Which was low. three days later the light comes on again. I see no signs of a leak though. any ideas??? My warranty is up at the end of april. My luck the cars been bulletproof the last 2 years and as soon as the warrenty is up the problems start reeling in.... only have 48,000 miles by the way. |

Then I would say the little air hole in your pump is bad and only working sometimes. The OP said his leaked out overnight so I would reinstall the pump and gasket to make sure it's in all the way.

That is what is funny about the washer fluid leak. The fluid has a rapid evaporation rate so it leaks out and dries up rather quickly. If it is a hot day or you drive alot you will almost never notice any fluid below the car or in the engine bay. Me and SolidJake looked at my tank today and I clearly saw it was leaking at and around the pump.

mine was leaking at the connector between the headlight washer pump (pump #4 in the above diagram) and the headlights, so I pulled the headlight washer pump out and plugged the whole with a bolt. I think I gained 2 hp with the washer pump delete.

Yea, its the pump. Mine did the same thing last year, and I remember reading a thread about it. I replaced mine and no issues with it at this moment.

Quick question before I remove the tank how do I remove the fluid?
Did ya'll just let it all leak out before replacing/repairing the pump?
