"So I went in today to get my "rental heap" and talked to the tech, and he said they found metal deposits in the oil. He also said that the whole system in the car has shut down and locked up, they tried to acsess the on board computer but it just errors out, and nothing works. It doesn't throw any codes, or anything at all. He also said to just wait it out, and that they ordered the new engine but BMW Canada might just decide to replace the car. I don't mind either out come. I hate this Charger so much I am just going to insure the winter viehicle now (2003 MB ML 500) and take the rental back."

Not good at all!

^^Understood, but it's sad though..I would assume that BMW would thoroughly test the car before releasing it? Especially since they know that EVERYONE will be watching through a magnifying glass since it's their first turbo gas engine in how many years??

I understand the concerns but I hope this is the only engine blowing up. You never know. Maybe OP is not telling us everything. Who can trust those crazy Canadians!?

Someone has to buy the first year other wise the bugs would never get worked out.

I would still get one in a heart beat. I wish they offered the engine in a 4 door and awd though.

I can't wait to see what that engine will pump out with a chip.

I drove one with 3XX miles on it and it already had kinda loud lifter tick that you could hear inside of the car or what sounded like lifter tick. But given the car had been very ragged out, it was a demo that over 100 people had driven in one week.

I think the 335i has direct injection, that could explain the noticable ticking. Highpressure injectors are typically louder. I hope this is just an isolated issue, I did get an up close look at a 328i yesterday, wow what a beauty. I then saw one driving down the road with dealer tags oncomming to me, its stunning. It just looks sleek and wide with the front tires pushed to the corner like that.

You mean the ones with the engines that had to be completely replaced?

1st year cars have always been known to have bugs that need working out, however this is no reason to start dumpin on them..I'm not being biased i dont really like bmws but they are always pushin the envelope of technology which may be a reason they are prone to issues. However in the long run they will a great run. Look at the 02 745, one of the most promblematic cars they had, however over the years all the technology in that car has leaked into the rest of their line up. as for the customers who bit the bullet and bought 02 7s, As a thank you BMW NA extended the warranty on 02 production cars to 100k/7yrs..So give the 335 a chance and see what happens, i'm eager to see what blows up on these cars first as i cant wait to tear it down..

You must mean the cars built during the period of 10/01 - 12/01 (all of these cars were sold as Model Year 2002 vehicles).

Well, ask then, about the early to mid 2001 M3's. They were rod bearing recall free.

So for roughly 4 months, M3 produced as 2001 models had a "stronger" powerplant?
