I have a neighbor who's in their late 50, maybe 60's.
You can easily tell they were hippies back then.
They are well off nowadays (I suppose one of the few hippies that succeeded, despite what the drugs did to their brains).
You may recall a few years back VW tried to revive their bus/vanagon and launched a redesigned model. It was a complete flop, mostly because the concept was hopelessly outdated and surpassed by newer and better technology.
Our neighbors bought one. Why, I asked.
I'm convinced that brought them back priceless memories. Something one aspires to have (when you have enough money), but then when you get there... eh, it's so much the thing itself as it is an achievement, a goal, memories, etc.

Same with Leica.

So it's a really expensive, new, outdated camera?

It's the only modern digital camera that utilizes a rangefinder mechanism for focusing, so it's all manual. Because of the rangefinder, it's far more efficient for manually focusing on the fly, making it especially well suited to running and gunning/street photography. I've always hated Auto-focus on any camera I use, it never gets it right, and with an SLR you can't get the precision focus necessary looking through that tiny viewfinder.

There's other perks as well, the lack of the single lens reflex system reduces shutter shake and lasts longer, it's full 35mm sensor, and most of all, the ability to use leica and other M mount lenses; they have an extremely unique look about them.

This article pretty well summarizes the more intangible reasons for going the Leica route,

leica is like any uber expensive item (watch's for example) where there are perfectly good inexpensive ones to choose from

you are really a brand/image whore...sure the quality is there (I have my grandfathers Leica 35mm from the 50s) but I also have his Nikon cameras from the 60s, 70s and 80s and a Polaroid from the 60s

I agree there are plenty of new cameras with superior image quality to a leica (sony RX1 and Nikon D800 come to mind), but as stated before, the appeal of the camera is the rangefinder mechanism itself, and the ability to operate in full manual. I looked for an inexpensive alternative, tried the RX1, the Fuji X-pro1, and while I love the sensors on them(well, I would adore the fuji if it was full frame), they aren't rangefinders.

Most of my photos are taken between busy sprees in the cockpit, a time when an autofocusing camera is ill-suited to the task, and where a full manual RF camera offers a clear advantage. Sometimes analog really is the way to go.

I sold every other piece of photo gear I had to grab it, and don't regret it one bit. It's also not a brand new M (there's a year wait list), it's the equivalent of the new M-E, which is $5450 new, I got mine for $4700 with three batteries and a couple other goodies.

The first old post about the camera with the worse picture has already consumed almost two pages .
