2001 Xenon Cutoff

i noticed that compared to almost every other car out there with xenons, even regular halogen projectors on Mazda3's, my cutoff line is very sloppy. Is there any way i can make it sharper ? mazda frickin 3 has a nicer cutoff and thats BS.. btw i drive an 01 330ci non-bixenon.

One way is to purchase an ECE lense or an ECE E46 projector from www.hidplanet.com . Information on E46 projectors can be found here www.hidplanet.com/forums/ but you must register to use it. ECE lense are clear in the center but fresnal on the outer edges so it will make your horizontal cutoff pretty sharp.(DOT like the one on your car, uses a fresnal lense which is why its fuzzy) Another idea is to swap to a clear lense from another vehicle with halogen projectors with the same focal point (its a trial an error actually). Bending the cutoff shield doesn't do much for the single xenon units, they are already almost flushed with the bowl.

You are probably noticing the difference in housings with the upgrade to bixenons in 02+ cars.

Bixenon's have a frosty lense and not a Fresnal lense. Also, the cutoff position, bowl shape, and size of the lense comes into effect. Bosch Bi-xenon's are still fuzzy in their cutoff compared to the likes of Stanley or Stanley/hybrid projectors used in the TSX, TL (fresnal), and S2000. P46's have a sharper cutoff (though less light spread) than either the Bosch singles or Bosch Bi-xenons.

ZKW (vs. Bosch on others) bi-xenon's IIRC only came on 2004 330Xi's, these are the sharpest E46 projectors available because they use a clear lense.

The only way to get a cutoff like S2000's is to modify and make your own shield. A lense swap requires you to open up the entire headlight from inside and a good set of steady hands.

Here is my cutoff with my own shields

The directions are for P46's. OEM units use TORX screws so you'll need a set. I don't want to be held liable for anything, this process is VERY hard to get perfect, you'll more than likely break some peices (though non visible peices and it will still be fully functional).

Picture of beam shot at the bottom is the old shot. I since changed to a DO-type shield instead of the Euro-type shield.

FYI, I might be selling mine if I don't break it open first when I get my new pair of OEM ones and modify it.

My 5000K HID's are more blue than my friends 6000K bulbs from 100yrds away because of the blue band of color above my cutoff, but I still have the funtionality of 5000K bulbs illuminated white-ish/yellow; he has a stock DOT OEM single xenons w/ non color shifted bulbs and his illuminated slightly white/blue on the road which is arguable harder to see things in detail.
