Engine Failures In All M3's???

I've been reading posts from several forums concerning the E46 M3 engine failures for some time now, and I have yet to find answers to my questions. IS THIS engine failure issue a potential problem in ALL M3's? Or is it a rare poduction/material defect that are found in a limited percent of cars produced? Finally, has BMW found a way (whether material or design) to prevent these problems from occuring in newer production cars? PLEASE, if anyone knows answers to any of these questions, please reply!

I think SMG's only...

I have heard engine failures for the SMG's only, but I could totally be wrong because I haven't really been following this closely. I have seen some pics where oil is splattered everywhere. It's a shame cause it's such a well designed car, well for the most part, and to have it all come crashing down is sad...I wouldn't worry if u have a normal M3 cause they really haven't changed from 2001-2002 and I know some1 with a 2001 and it works perfectly...

well i've seen posts from both SMG and 6 speed M3s - I think they will say its a limited production issue but who really knows until there is more info on why they failed ...
