Oil drain trap door

Is there suppose to be a door or cover where the engine oil drain plug is? My 2002 330Ci has none and I'm wondering if some jerk simply left it off. D*mn - it's bad when you can't even get a decent oil change without Gross Incompetence (I call it GI) rearing it's ugly head.

TIA,
tsp

Most of the recent cars don't have it. The Bentley manual lists it as present only on coupes, but apparently even that isn't mandatory. Why did BMW decide to skip it beats me...

I stand corrected. I now have never seen or heard of a US spec e46 with an oil drain door.

I don't have it either. I bought my car used and when I started changing my own oil I noticed that it wasn't there. I thought it was a tech at the dealer that just left it off. Glad to hear that this may be an intentional missing part.

Glad to hear that others do not have this part. I also thought that mine was missing, but I guess that is not the case.

My '02 330ci has the trap door also. About halfway through the free maintenance period I noticed it was missing when I was doing an additional oil change in between BMW's lovely 15,000 oil changes. I notified my SA about it missing and was told that the techs just throw them away, no big deal. I told her that German engineers weren't accustomed to equipping cars with parts that were supposed to be thrown away by oil change technicians. She bristled about it until I suggested we call the engineering dept. in Germany for a possible ruling on the matter. The next oil change the door was put back on the car with no quibbling. It was always replaced at oil change time until the end of free maintenance. I believe that laziness on the techs part was responsible for my 'missing' trap door....yours too!

Another old thread revival.
I put it back on mine. Although the later years seem to have a little different design.
Another reason I think it could be missing is the push-in and lock screw that holds it in. If not fully secured it'll come loose and trap door will fall out from wind drag.

These covers come in different sizes depending on the engine. The 330Ci/i uses the same cover as the 330d. The diesel comes with the cover as standard.

I use my cover for engine noise reduction.
