Buyers remorse.. LED tail lamps need advice.

So i just bought coupe DEPO LEDs from a sponser on this site for $350. It doesn't look anything like the OEM ones at all when I was told they were 'identical'.

I plugged them in and it is just not what i expected. To the average persons eye, they wouldn't notice the difference, but everybody knows what it is like when 'you' know its not the same... esspecially when the OEM are SO cool looking....

Should i return them and spend the extra $530 to get OEM ones from the stealership??? It is $200 more but is it worth it? I'm in such a pickle. Advice needed please. Tell me waht you think, I'm gonna make a decision tomorrow.

LED Tails

JSilver,

I would talk to the original sponsor, maybe something could be worked out? Otherwise, I would hang on to them as a backup or sell them privately. Personally, I would stay away from OEM, too expensive. I would search around for LED tails... Bimmian, just started selling LED Tails. Check them out!

Thanks...

Gordon

Do they not light up as bright or something? I was gonna order a set of these in a month. Is anyone on this board satisfied with their set of aftermarket tails or what? Pics please

Hey Guys, I should have taken some pics, I just Un installed them, but i'll plug them back in and take a few pics. I am just not satisfied with the look of them. Check it out in a few minutes. AHH, if Umnitza lets me return htem I am going to go OEM. I'd rather spend 200 more and get exaclty what i want.

That is the best way to do it otherwise you will never be satisfied. Also interesting in seeing pics.

So here is the low down.

There was no 'light out' warning ect. The fitment of the product is Suburb. Everything works perfectly... it just doesn't look that great. I suppose you get what you pay for. Things that I really like about the OEM one is that is has such a cool effect/ look (ie: when on the breaks only the center LEDs go brighter) This one everything is on when the breaks go on, and they arn't as bright as the OEM ones. I wasn't able to get any picture of the lamps with the breaks on, but trust me they arn't as bright as you would imagine. I didn't screw them in, only plugged them in for the pictures (I don't want to some how damage them if i return them).
Here it is unplugged:

As you can see it seems pretty legit. Here is the side shot:
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Up to this point i was pretty happy, They looks great. This is what the back looks like. NOTHING like OEM here, but I knew that going into the products. The back doesn't matter than much to me.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Here is the lamp with the lights on, but no breaks. As you can see they are not extremely bright (take into account i am using a flash):
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

3/4 shot of the lamp. See how you can't see the LEDs as well from an angle. The LEDs are tucked pretty far back in the well:

This part was the only bit i was not disappointed with at all. The turn signals are PERFECT. Super bright, instant on/off, great color. I have NO complaints about the turn signals:

Well I hope this helps you. If the dealer won't take these back for some reason, I will probably be selling these for $340 shipped.

What is this LCM stuff? What is a LCM? I thought the OEM were just plug and play. If i have to buy an LCM with the OEM ones I don't think I'm going to sell these.

lol lcm is the lighting control module, you need it so that your car recognizes the LEDs...there are ways around it though, i think you can build a resistor pack that will stop the bulb out lights from coming on and they should work fine.

Light Control Module

they are plug and play if you have a newer BMW... I think its 10/01 build date.

What year is your car?

The whole LCM thing is why many here choose to go with aftermarket LEDs with resistors built in like the Umnitza ones. Depending on your BMW's exact build date, you may or may not need a new LCM. BTW, the only difference I see between OEM and Umnitza tails is the frosted look of the center LEDs. OEM ones are brighter, I agree. But if you don't want to deal with extra work on LCM, aftermarket is the way to go.
