I want to show you guys the brochure for my car, not because you'll be interested in something MB on an BMW board, or because my car is somehow special, but because it's the only 25 year old German car brochure I have.
Take a look at this, then take a look at the brochure for a modern car. What kind of shopper do you think this is designed to appeal to, and what kind of shopper do you think a modern car brochure is designed to appeal to? This is why I say they've chosen their market.

before i click, your car is a full sized luxury sedan, what comparable modern car are we doing the brochure comparison with?
S class compares to a 7 series. You know this right?

Yes, I know that. It doesn't matter. Any contemporary brochure. In fact comparing it to the 7 or S brochures is all the better to prove my point (look at the largest caption on catalog page 8 for instance, I don't think you'd ever see that in a modern S-class or 7er brochure). Just click it, you'll see.

Well, I would expect a 1, 3, or 5 brochure to put more emphasis on technical information than a 7 brochure and less emphasis on luxury than a 7 brochure, and my point is how the car companies have moved away from marketing to people who give a crap about driving towards marketing to people who have money but shouldn't have a driver's license.

each class of benz and series of MB is marketed at different markets. Its not as simple as Brand X.
7 buyers are VERY different from 3 buyers, in age, and income. 5 buyers tend to be a lil in between.
You can tell by the ads. You rarely see a 7 ad where theyre ripping it around some tight twisties, but a 3, all day. a 5 a little of both. target products, for target audiences/buyers.
The in Europe the 1 and 3 tend to be marketed a tad differently, but the 5 and 7s essentially the same

But all modern brochures say little of substance. What substance there is is really advertising buzzword disguised as substance. It's mostly large pictures of a car in front of a gated entrance or something like that. The higher numerically the BMW, the more marketed towards luxury you'd expect, and the less technical detail you'd expect, for the very reasons you detailed.

Look at the old brochure. It's 36 pages, not including the color charts or technical specs booklet. And there's a TON of text on each page. Many of the pictures are detailed cutaways. Very few are just beauty shots, of the ones that are almost none approach full page size. Can you imagine reading "You are not in the soft lap of luxury" or "an automobile cockpit is not a lounge or a living room" in the brochure for a new 7/S?

eco-friendliness, less trees killed. PLUS, its the age of the internet, more cars are researched and inquired on over the net than anywhere, Only after do buyers normally go to the dealer.
its the times man, why spend money on a brochure that no one will read when you can capture their attention better with a video on tv or the web. or a HUGE billboard.
Everything in the brochure is not on the website or the 30 second ad.

I don't think you're getting my point. The presence of cupholders in modern BMWs and Mercedes is an example of my point.

They have told people this is acceptable and caved in. A company that cared about making a driver's car would say to hell with those buyers. Like Porsche does to audiophiles (says right in my dad's 996's manual that it's a bad car to listen to the radio in)...but Porsches have cupholders too now.....

but theyre still very much drivers cars bro, maybe not as hardcore as before, but they still are.
Again, its not so much caving in, its making what will sell, what buyers want.

Once upon a time a man put his name on a product and marketed it because he was proud of it, not because it appealed to the lowest common denominator.

I want the Ruger Special to be put into production (yes, that's right, Ruger made a car).
