1. take the msf course (it runs about $200 for 16 hrs of class, 8hr in class room and 8hrs on a bike).
2. i suggest getting an old beat up bike < 600cc. maybe a 250cc or so. insurance will be quite high for someone at 18 especially on a 600cc or higher.

is it just me or is there a new thread about someone getting/planning to get a bike every week?
start with something easy to ride with eg. small motor, non-sport, and then move up. |

your first bike should be small, less than 600cc.
If you have some experience, 600 is fine. I have 10 years of dirtbiking experience so I plan on starting on a 600.

There was just a post on this...
http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=459000 Ninja 250 if you have never riden. SV650 or a GS500 if you have and want to play it safe. If you really want to learn, start off on a SV650 or GS500. Then move up to a 600 or maybe 750. I ride with a lot of guys ranging from SV650's to Busa 1300's... and it is not so much about the bike, as the rider. I would stay away from liter bikes... If you truely master a 600 to the best of its ability, youd be racing AMA. It also depends on what kind of riding you are going to do. I have an R6 and i'd take it any day over an R1 in the canyons, on the track, and for every day riding. I'd suggest getting a used bike to learn on. Also don't skimp on gear. It saves your life and skin. Also invest in some good frame sliders The R6 is an excellent bike. Sit on a few before making up your mind. The GSXR is nice if your shorter, because I would never ever lower a bike.

getting your lisence is cake. take a written test for your permit, but because your under 21 you'll need to take the course, but once you pass that i dunno if you have to then take the riding test. I didnt take the course, just the wirtten and riding test. |

The Suzuki Hayabusa is an excellent choice for beginners.

Ive been ridin for over 15yrs been there dont that, its best to take some basic lessons so you can understand the basics on manuverin bike and changin gears its similar like drivin manual in a car not difficult at all. The rest like someone said permit and road test easy, as far as first bike a used 600 so you can get use to ridin the streets then finally buy a new one ,these new 600's have alot of power and you can do alot with them so you wont need anything bigger. Dont even bother buyin anything smaller cause its also a pain tryin to get rid of it. GL and be safe with your decision.

get a roadbike. much healthier, and it doesn't hurt as much when you fall.

My first bike was a GSX-R 750. I dont think the size matters much on how you learn if you are responsible and respect the power of the bike. I moved to a 600 now because its lighter and to me is more fun to throw around into turns. All preference, but I have had a bike for the past 5 years and will never go without one now
