I'll eventually get the e92 4 door version (family requirements and all).... but I do hope to be in a position to keep my M3 vert should I so desire.

Probably because it will take most of us 3 years before we can aford to buy an e90.

I love my e46 M3 but would take an e90 M3 hands down if I could aford it. Most of the new BMW's grow on me after I see them in person. They tend to look better in person than they do in pictures.

I find the e46 to be the highest point BMW has reached with style... it's unfortunately been all Nissan inspired styling ever since then IMO. Bimmers have always aged very gracefully in the past. You see a nicely kept 1600, 2002, Bavarian or 3.0 and think what a nice Bimmer. This understated elegance continues into all but the latest generation. How often do you see a nicely kept early 70's Datsun and think what a nice car (save for a pristine Z)? Sales stats have certainly shown that the last generation was more popular than the current genre.
