So what's the deal with the bulb part numbers? I mean... I used 1156 and 1157 for mine and they all seem to work fine. What is 7440? I figured all e46's would use the same ones...

Well, there's different fitment bulbs for different types of lights throughout a specific car. And then there are different model cars, which obviously may have different fitments altogether. So the best thing to do is to check here:
http://www.sylvania.com/ConsumerProd...lacementGuide/
for your specific car's application(s) =]

Well 1156s are used for front and rear turn signal bulbs on prefacelift E46s, while 7440 are used for front turn signal bulbs on facelift E46s. 7440s are also referred to as "W21W" or "Wedge Base", with reference to the part of the bulb that goes into the bulb holder

Look for the Matrix 2 LED bulbs on autolumination I just got mine in 7440 fitment for like $10 + shipping.
I know for a fact that they carry 1156 and 1157 (bought in bulk for a couple friends as well when I bought my bulbs). Not sure what else they have (haven't checked). I highly recommend the Matrix 2's. They look AT LEAST 2 times brighter than the matrix 1's (found on Jlevi's web site)

]its been a few weeks now? how are these doing on yoru car? did yours come with resistors? are they needed?

hey, yah, these Matrix2's have been working well =] . Since it takes advantage of our reflector housings, it's brighter than the Matrix1's (due to more rear-facing LEDs on the Matrix2 version!). As far as resistors go, YES, they are needed! Otherwise there's going to be too much power put to your LED bulb (LED bulbs don't need that much power to operate), and in turn, it'll flash extremely fast

autolumination has a page with resistors and stuffs...I believe you only need to get the 6ohm resistors if you're going to have front turn signal LEDs
as for fitment, as long as you get the same fitment as your stock bulbs, it should be fine. It'll come down to color hue (but that's personal preference). I can live with mine, but you'll hafta see for urself in real life to judge oh well, these are cheap, just try it, if you dun like it, throw em' away? (figure of speech)

edit: btw, my friend has M3 as well, and I think you need to alter an 1156 bulb to fit into your front turn signals. He recently messed up the alteration, so he has to get a new set =O ...
For me, the only 1156 I use is for my reverse backup lights =P, my front turn signals = 7440 fitment. But double check all of your fitments just in case. Here: http://www.sylvania.com/ConsumerProd...lacementGuide/
