Steptronic Owners: Who really uses their steptronic?

I personally use my step all the time in spite of the fact my passengers make fun of me because of the slow shifting. I hope to get some software soon.

Steptronic most the time! Especially after I retrofitted the Switchtronic system...

I use both sport and steptronic

I'm about 70 percent sport and 30 percent steptronic. I've noticed that steptronic mode has lower torque than sport. The GM tranny web site seems to confirm lower torque in steptronic mode but I don't think it's as heavy as a loss as they indicate. I usually use the steptronic when there's the damn peddle delay or the f'ing kick down mode doesn't work as usual. The damn shift delay annoys the hell out of me. Isn't it supposed to shift quicker if you do it manually, isnt that the whole point. No its like shift - do do do do do shift do do duh duh duh dumb. The damn sticky peddle throttle delay sucks also. Why the hell do they have all these delays built in? wtf?

If I had step I would use almost all the time...I test drove a 330 with step, it seemed pretty cool...When the sales guy wanted to show me some tricks, he was slaming the shifter! Its a pretty cool concept.

Gm tranny web?? Isn't the steptronic transmission in the 330, the 5 speed auto gearbox from ZF?
ZF transmission

I'm pretty sure the URL points to the right transmission.

I really dont like mine, It feels weird shifting up up up , then down, down down, I always want to shift in an up down motion like a real gear shift & it screws me up. Also its so slow, I use it sometimes if Im at a red light & want to get in front of the guy beside me to lane change , other than that it pretty much sucks. I wish I had a stick.

Even though i personally prefer a manual shifter in terms of driving involvement, i bought my ride with auto box for the reason that i'm in city traffic 80% of the time (absolutely horrendous in london) and didn't want to wear myself out changing gears a million times a day. Having said that, i'm in Sport mode most of the time so that i can whack down the step when overtaking, changing lanes or bolting from the lights. Truly a wondrous device, gives me the best of both worlds.

When I am driving alone and want to have some fun off red lights and while getting to highway speed, the Steptronic is great to play with.

When I am driving people around and/or I am in NYC with all the traffic, I keep it in the automatic mode.

Kind of like having the best of both worlds.

I believe that Sport mode only goes up to 4th and not 5th. Plus it revs higher before changing gears. It's a less smooth ride, but it's faster.

100 % Manual mode all the time, I have not used step/sport for at least a year. I wish I was cool like Vince and had that BAD ASS SMG/step system.

Doesn't shorten shift tim electronically yet, but the time to reach out for the knob and shift is reduced greatly. Besides, keeping both hands on the wheel and shifting is an estatic experience!

I love step... you can easily switch over and just play around....
besides I have the uuc tse and in step mode going from each gear sounds amazing in my opinion.... Yeah the shift point are a bit delayed but thats the reason why they have the software for it. Sport mode is fun too....more aggressive...and faster

but yeah looking into getting the shark injector when it comes out in a few months. Can't wait!!!!!

Vince, can you shift gears with the smg when turning the steering wheel quickly a couple of turns?

I've tried steptronic in my girlfriends car (323i), I don't really like it too much. The shifting feels backwards and I feel like I should be doing something with my left foot when I shift. I also have a tendency to forget to shift when I'm in her car. But that's just me.

step

Always man. mode, any one noticed that the drive by wire pulls back the throttle when you short shift, listen during the shift at the intake closing then opens after the shift, even with your foot on the floor all the while. My Chrysler 300 would bang hard when I would short shift it the same way, how crude!
